Question about big turbo kits
« on: May 06, 2018, 09:11:58 pm »
Hi guys, can anyone with big turbo knowledge please answer the following with regards to big turbo kits:

- How does something like the Nortech kit fit to the downpipe given it has an external waste gate?

- Is it possible to use a sports cat downpipe with a big turbo?

In the early stages of research so any help would be appreciated, thanks!

From my own research, you'll need a down pipe to suit the turbo of choice as not only do they have external waste gates but also have a different bolt pattern for the mating flange. You can use a sports cat with any setup I believe, as considering the tighter MOT regulations that have just come in it seems silly not too!

More points I have learnt over the time I've been looking into this:

- When you run over 400bhp through a CDL engine (or similar K04 based engines) you really are into the territory of blowing stuff up so forged internals are a must
- If your starting with a K03 based car, you'll need forged internals much sooner
- Transmission and chassis upgrades need to be factored in as well

A hybrid K04 solution like the TTE420 will grant you around the 400bhp limit without the need to rebuild everything. That's the route I've taken for now, least till I can source a second engine to build up in slow time. Even doing the work myself it's going to be expensive...

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

Thanks for the info, so the downpipes are also custom jobs? I can see why this gets expensive.

I've also got a TTE420 on a CDL and it's got me thinking, well as some of the supporting mods are already in place, why not go the whole way...?

Where are you doing your research? Seems to be almost no information around unlike the pages and pages available on stage 2 / hybrid level upgrades.

Do Nortech do a full kit?  I can only see a tubular manifold for a Golf R.

Can you weld and do you have stainless tube cutting equipment?  Making a DP is easy if you have the kit, especially with V band flanges.  I would route the wastegate dump back into the DP rather than a silly 'race car' screamer pipe.   The noise will quickly piss you off and exhaust gas will get into the cabin, not to mention being illegal.  And we all know Carbon monoxide is the silent killer.

You don't need a fancy tig welder, but back purging is a good idea to prevent 'sugaring', which can break off and chip turbine wheels.  I made a DP for my VR6 turbo years ago with a cheap MIG welder from Machine mart, a hacksaw, some patience and a lot of coffee  :happy2:

Have a look on Youtube for 'Project MK5' on Deutsche Auto Parts' channel.  They built a big turbo car and one of the episodes goes over making a DP, if you want some inspiration.

Nortech Tubular Manifold and exhaust with an Owens Motorsport turbo.

Various Turbo options available....

Just go to Stattlers in Sheffield.
They do every option available and also can supply used CDL engines if you want to build a big power car.

Most tuners have followed this company when it comes to fitting big turbo kits.

Is worth keeping an eye on the TFSI parts for sale Facebook page and there is an APR GTX2867 Stage 3 kit listed for £3k

TTE480 doesn't make anywhere near 480 and CDLs break pistons easily with TTE420s and above.   Even that engine needs rods and pistons......unless you are sensible and tune it down and just enjoy a fatter torque curve, but everyone wants peak numbers.  Bye bye pistons  :sad1:

Yes there is a full Nortech kit sold by TSR and AKS with a Garrett 3071R gen 2 turbo - i couldn't weld to save my life so relying on research and trying to get my head round what is sensible or not... yeah I think the screamer pipe would get tiring after one day of normal use. Thanks for the video suggestion - I'll take a look

There is TTE480 too.

With this to really make the most of it you'd be forging anyway, so might as well plan to spend big and enjoy a proper big turbo, as has been pointed out, they make good power but apparently not the 480 hp quoted
