Changing VVT gear on MK6 1.4 TSI GT

Hi guys,

I have a 2009 VW Golf MK6 1.4 TSI GT which is due for a cam chain. How often should the VVT inlet camshaft gear be changed? Do they go wrong, is there anyway to tell if it's faulty. If it does need replacing, how hard is it to do? Do you need any special tools to take it off and back on again?
