How-To Improve an Evoms Engine Cover....

So nice RR. Torn between modifying the OEM and he Evoms. Lots of inspiration though.

The Evoms cover costs about £90 and you can use your oem centre strip if you don't want to spend megabucks (don't ask - I've forgotten how much and it's best left forgotten) on the carbonfibre strip. But I really do think that the Evoms cover needs the minor modifications.

Customising your own oem cover such as like NeilM did, will be much cheaper.

Someone else might be bringing out an aftermarket engine cover sometime this year. I can't say more just yet.

However, nothing has been received yet and while I was at VWR having my car serviced this week, they took it upon themselves to fix it.





I'm not especially bothered if things look OEM or not but this solution does use VAG parts - Split tubular casing plus the ubiquitous cable-ties. That Simon fella at VWR is a star!

Hate to say it, but will still chafe.

The idea is to remove or neutralise the moving sharp edge.  The best way is to either use some gilm sourced edging strip, or cut a grommet in half, and glue it to the sharp edge, the sharp edge will then become a blunt rubber edge, which will rub on the coolant hose and not have any effect.

As it stands the sharp edge will sit in a groove and cut through the cable conduit, and onto the coolant hose below.

....Thanks, Dave. Then I think I'll do belt n braces and grommet as well. I still don't understand why other Evoms cover users haven't identified this potential problem.

Alternatively I might just enlarge the 'U' in the Evoms cover so it's well clear and never touches!

I decided to enlarge the 'U' so absolutely nothing touches rather than fiddle around with doctoring grommets. I've left VWR's cable conduit protection on as well but there's now at least 4mm clearance all around and no movement.

Sorry if this seems like a necropost, but I have just got my Evoms engine cover, it looks great, much nicer than I was expecting.
Though just wondering why you cut out the front part of your Robin? Also where do you get the parts for the screw/glue fix, and also what have you done to stop the rubbing of the coolant pipe? Don't want that happening to mine.
And finally, where/how much for a plain centre strip, and also again for the carbon fibre one?

I'll try and answer as many of your questions as I can  

- I didn't cut out the front of mine. Is yours different? I cut the sides but only at the fixing points as described earlier in this thread.

- The stainless steel screws and nut were off-the-shelf from a local hardware store. Should be very easy to source.

- The glue is from a friend in the aircraft industry. Not readily available. An ultra strong metal to metal glue would suffice but I only needed it to repair my broken cover gifted by GTIjames.

- If you check out my earlier posts in this thread you'll see what I've done to both protect the coolant hose and improve ease of Evoms cover removal.

- Plain centre strip can be bought either second-hand or new from VW dealer.

- Real carbon strip (OSIR) can be bought from TTshop. I don't know the current price.

ill be on the case with definately the cables ties and the u shape cut out.
and ill re look at the other bits once in place.
i have afew plans for the centre peice-as i have a spare one to give me some variation.... i just need to work out a way of making them interchangeable!!

Making the centre strips interchangeable could be tricky but that's not saying it can't be done.

Basically the Evoms flat aluminium cover has to be cut/drilled to receive the 4 short 'legs' of the centre strip. On the plastic oem filter box cover it all spring slots together but here the materials are now different. If it's not a super tight fit, the centre strip will begin to rattle and so I've used rubbery black Tiger Seal quite generously. It'll be interesting to see how you solve it.

You'll probably notice this anyway, but the centre strip doesn't fit exactly central on the Evoms - It has to allow for the oil filler cap. If you look closely at mine you'll see it's off centre but my version of the Evoms has a front which places it for you, Nathan's doesn't but it shouldn't be a problem.

I think I'd rather adapt the plastic strip so I could centralise it a little more!
