I asked exactly the same question a while back... the consensus was some kind of softener crystals... but I have to say after 10 years I am not sure of the benefit they would have. I just popped em back as they cant be doing any harm   :smiley:

They are a vw item available from the dealers cannot remember what though  :laugh:
