Time for a change? Audi or keep to VW.

Why does everyone always only ever consider VW or Audi, at times blindly so?! There are several other good brands out there that make really decent cars aka BMW that for some reason, people here never consider!? Very odd!

oh, im getting a new car, but its VAG without even questioning it. aside from the golf GTI/R the other VW cars are naff, the S3 is dated and dull, and the other audi cars are generally inferior to their BMW counterparts!

anyone care to enlighten me as to the reason for this? id be interested to know!

agreed, ed30 to s3 is hardly "change", and going from a ed30 with 5k on the clock to a S3 just screams changing for the sake of it. 

TBH mate seeing as you hardly do any mileage and you say its a weekend toy, why not get a propper weekend car instead of these hopped up shopping trolleys?

It all depends on circumstances as to what your weekend toy can be.
I bought my GTI new in May 2006. It's just turned 7,000 miles and only comes out (some) dry weekends as I have a company car for a daily driver. I enjoy driving the GTI at weekends and also enjoy detailing it. The thing is, I have a wife and 2 girls (4 & 7 year olds so have to have a car which has a bit of boot space for days out as well as a proper back seat for child seats. 3 doors is fine though. My father in law is in a similar situation and drives an ed30. He has a boat and needs boot space for carrying stuff.

For myself, I would like to have some sort of Porsche but I need some practicality. I have to agree that for £20k to £30k, VW and Audi have some interesting options (Rocco, S3, gti & Golf R, TT).
You need to spend a lot more money to get a decent BMW in my opinion and then you still have 'another BMW'. My company car is a 3 series albeit a poverty spec one. It's a good mile muncher but will never put a smile on my face like the GTI  

Nowt wrong with changing a car you hardly use. I would do the same if I could afford it and it would be either a Scirocco R, S3 or R Golf

Carrera S would suit me, and that's penty raw and fast enough for my liking. Plus a nice bit of sideways action to boot. Just no comparrision with a VAG, unless we're talking R8, but I'd still have the Porsche.

have to agree, the 911 carrera S is such a rounded car.

If I were to buy a weekend car, it would not be a hothatch. It would be something like a porsche/Tvr etc. Second hand, low mileage and very, very fast.

Out of the S3 and the golf R, id pick the Golf R. I think the looks and the fact it has just been released warrants the exra £££££

like everone has mentioned that certainly wouldnt be my choice for a second car, Ive came from an E46 M3 to the GTI as i thought it was pointless having two cars, a weekend one, and the daily clio run about, especially as i didnt have a garage to keep the m3 in so i was all snug and warm, i felt bad about it lying out side and not getting used for weeks at a time. so i decided that i should just run one car until ive got a garage. The M3 Couldnt be an only car for me as i need a hatchback for transporting my dog and mountain bike so When i changed to the golf, honestly i couldnt of asked for a better car its perfect. I have already started saving for my next car which is going to be a second car along with the GTI that is after ive got my garage Roll on the 997 carrera s or the new generation Turbo M3 !! thats the sort of cars id go for if i was you mate, but its your money and you should spend it as you please, if you like the your golfs then the golf R is what id go for

As Oli said earlier, it's not just about which car has the best performance but more a case of which has the desired performance AND which suits your particular lifestyle. What it costs is simply down to what you either can afford or want to spend - Constantly chasing value-for-money will never buy you happiness regarding cars.

What's great about our GTI's and similar hatchbacks is how practical they are on an everyday basis as well as delivering respectable performance.

The rest is what you fancy, what excites you.

I don't doubt it!, but yours is still a golf, and his is a porsche 911, I know what Id rather be driving.....

Good scalp by the way, but surely you should be looking for turbo's, and not a humble Carerra

thats why i have a 4x4 as a second car and not something more exotic
