Smell of petrol in my oil :(
« on: August 16, 2018, 08:17:30 pm »
Hi. Just had my car remapped and thought best to do an oil change. I noticed there was a slight smell of fuel from the oil!

It’s indenting on changing the cam follower asap but could my fuel pump be knackered  ?

Cars an edition 30 with 88k. Going to rake through paperwork to see if the followers been done.

The seal in your HPFP could be on its way out.

You need to establish if it just smells of over rich blow by, or neat fuel.    If you take the HPFP out and smell the oil around the seal and the recess it sits in on the chain cover, if it stinks of neat petrol, it's likely the pump, or a dribbling injector.  Any rough idling or cold starting issues?

Remapped engines do cause the oil to turn black and stink pretty quickly.  Tuners go way over the top with the fuel to cover their arses, and it means much more frequent oil changes as a result.

You can also rub a bit of the oil between your finger and thumb.  Diluted oil loses a lot of lubricity and won't feel as 'slippery' as it should.  That sounds weird I know, but it's an old school check I can't let go of

If in doubt with the pump, just replace the whole thing.  It's about £180 from the dealer and you will get the latest revision.  It's been updated a few times over the years.

Thanks for the info. I can’t find any history of the follower been changed so I’ve ordered a new one and a new fuel pump. Euro car parts doing a big sale so got a pump for £145 and a follower kit from awsome gti.

Idle seems ok but I’ve not taken much notice, I’ll check tonight

Cars only been remapped for a couple weeks and the oils been changed around the same time and it’s already smelling of fuel so I think it’s safest just to change the pump

Yeah it shouldn't be smelling strongly of petrol already, so probably best to change the pump and definitely the follower.

Didn't know ECP did the high pressure pumps.  So long as it's a proper Hitachi one, it should be fine.

Best get that order cancelled as it is the wrong type pump! You need the HPFP which mounts in the cylinder head, made by Hitachi.

Thanks I’m meant to be collecting tomorrow but I’ll cancel it. Strange it says it’s meant for the BYD engine but isn’t the right one

Does anyone know the part number for the correct one ?

There are two pumps in the system, the low pressure one which you ordered and the high pressure one (06F-127-025-M)
