Meh. Test drive one. I did and it felt no different to the MK5. The cloth seats were a step backwards from the Edition 30. Other than flashy dashboard and steering controls, it felt like the MK5. It felt slower than the ED30 so I didn't bother.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I found the same.  The MK7 makes 258lbft torque from 1500-4500 and Edition 30s make 221lbft torque from 2200-5200rpm (standard).   I was expecting the MK7 to feel a lot more responsive as a result, but surprisingly, it wasn't!  It's probably quicker in reality, but it just doesn't 'feel' it.  Probably very tame, linear engine mapping.

The interior is all very familiar as you say, but to me it feels much better put together.  Especially the arm rest assembly and centre tunnel/console frame!  The MK7 is a lot quieter inside and has what feels like to me, a quicker ratio steering rack.  I did notice the MK7 is a little more twitchy in a straight line.  I don't know if that's a geometry or tyre choice thing.

The MK7 definitely is not enough of a leap forward in terms of feel to make me drop my MK5, but it is definitely the better car technically.

As mentioned above I'd probably wait for the mk8 if you were to go for the mk7 should affect the price a bit.

If I was to get a MK8, I would be tempted to lease it.   The MK5 is very easy to work on and has simple electronics.  Not so the modern stuff with so much proprietary infotainment junk, funky displays and sophisticated engines.  £££££s.

My method does, it was why I did the mod in the first place as you need to keep dipped on with main when you have twin HIDs.
