Front wing wheel arch Rust
« on: September 24, 2018, 12:48:51 pm »
Is this repairable without replacing the whole front wing?

I guess it depends how bad. I have a set of replica wings that I've never painted that I need to get up for sale since I managed to find an OEM set with hardly any rust on that I'll get repaired and repainted.

One side needs a new wing as it’s quite bad, the other is only just starting to go so can be patched up and be good for another 12 months or so.
I’ve seen the wings on eBay but concern would be if the colour doesn’t match properly

I got a perfect genuine wing in the exact same colour as my car from a breaker for £30.

Its a case of keeping a look out and is by far the cheapest and best solution personally (genuine part and factory paint).......easy job to replace, just a lot of bolts (hour job)

Mine is in the sage green colour so would have to very lucky to find one in good condition at a breaker’s yard.

Might order one of these:

Got mine from there a couple of months ago, fitted it recently, bang on.

Cannot fault it, colour & fitment are really good. Mine is black Lc9z.

Easy to do, me a mate done it, followed a video guide on YouTube.

Thanks, yes I’ve watched the video. Wheel has to come off plus possibly the bumper too. Need to have the Torx bits.
It would save a couple of hundred doing it myself.

If you fit s/hand wings, it's a good opportunity to spray some U-Pol Raptor on the inner side before fitting them.  They'll never rust again.

I'm maybe going to order a pair of those wings off eBay too. Fed up with trying to get some decent used ones in lc9z.

What are people doing to the foam pads etc that originally cause the problem? Removing them altogether?

Another option... not sure on Ebay prices, some are more than others. But Euro Car Parts sell Aftermarket wings... with the online discount code today they work out to be £44 each.
I never knew euros sold these, but I place money on them being the exact same as the ebay ones.

For what its worth, I ordered a pair of the eBay wings a few weeks back and got one of them fitted yesterday. They're ok - fitment around the bottom of the A pillar isn't quite as good as I'd hoped but going to take another look at it at a later date as I was running out of day light but the colour match is spot on and all other edges lined up as per the OEM wing.

Removing the original wing, you can really see what a total hash VW made of gluing that massive foam, water holding pad to the wing. What the hell was their thinking behind that!?

Anyway, one side of the car looks a little tidier now anyway - will get the other done ASAP.

Car Mechanics magazine are doing a project GTI at the moment. In the next issue they're going to be looking at sorting out the rusty wings using pattern parts.  :popcornsoda:
