MK1 Golf GTI Edition 30 Project.
« on: September 26, 2018, 09:17:08 pm »
I thought some of you might be interesting in my current project. I recently bought a MK5 Golf GTI Edition 30 that needed some repair work, with the plans of something different and a bit of challenge.

The knowledge and expertise on the forum really helping too.

Being a Cat D car due to rear quarter damage the plan was to transfer the Edition 30 heart into my 1983 MK1 Golf GTI, rather than repair the Edition 30.

So the project started of stripping down the Edition 30..

I'd be interested in your views on this. I'm expecting mixed views with the Edition 30 being a limited car.  What do you think? What would you have done?

I like it  :happy2: I don't have an issue since the donor car was a write off, look forward to seeing the end result.

Awesome project! Looking forward to seeing more on this one.

It wouldn't be fun if it was easy, I just wish it wasn't this much fun.

Looking forward to updates on this. Best thread for some time!

I really liked what the German(? think he was) guy did with a Mk2 and Mk5 GTi transplant into it, inc the dash etc. Are you going sleeper on the giveaways it's been done? ie keeping the interior etc standard

It's a semi sleeper, externally OEM, but has a six point roll cage also installed

Have you ever wondered what your ED30 would look like if you ever stripped it down?

I've seen the Youtube vid of this, agreed it a v.neat OEM install. I'm keeping the original dash, steering wheel and clocks all in place, but sorta tempted to swap out the clocks for the highline ones that came with the car?

Cool project. I'd agree with keeping the mk1 dash etc. Swaps with the donor cars dash and everything are cool but once novelty wears off, they just look out of place.

Great work  :happy2:   I had no idea the MK5's bulkhead panel unbolted like that!  I guess it makes left and right hand production easier for them.

I did a 16V swap into a MK1 over 20 years ago (makes me feel super old) and it really made the car.  I was never a fan of the 8 valve lump.   Best way to recycle a bashed ED30  :happy2:  Who cares what purists think.  It's not exactly a rare engine or platform!

Welcome along!

A very interesting thread so far. I've read about an ED30 powered Lupo in PVW many years ago, and a Lotus Elise with the ED30 lump (tuned and was bonkers fast!). I've seen in person a mk1 Audi TT that APS built with an ED30 engine (very stealthy and looked completely OEM & at home in the engine bay) - I will follow your build with interest!

As Pudding says - very interesting to see how the mk5 is built - some chap on here was building (stripping) an ED30 for a track car (which was really interesting), but the build thread was never completed. Looks as though you are well in to your build already. Is it a manual or DSG car?

Don't worry about upsetting us - as a VW enthusiast I'm simply happy to see an ED30 live on in another form, rather than just being crushed! (PS - don't suppose you still have the drivers side xenon?!)…
