Another Oil question
« on: October 14, 2018, 01:02:52 pm »
Accidentally bought the Quantum Platinum plus 5W40 from TPS yesterday for my Eddie 30 (standard high miler). Now on the face of it the VW recommended standards are VW503 and VW 507. The Platinum plus only states VW502.00, VW505.00 and VW505.01 Ok so that looks like a no brainer and its wrong. However when you look at the recommendations from TPS they show this can be used for my car. So whats the real difference and is it definitely NOT suitable for my car? I have found some spec sheets for Audi for North America which show Quantum Platinum is an approved oil for the 5W40 oil and is VW502.00, VW505.00 and VW505.01 approved.

The issue is that the Quantum Platinum Plus has the almost the same specs as Castrol Edge Titanium FST. I guess the key here is almost but will it not perform? I intend to change oils around the 7k to 10k marks. It looks like the VW505.00 standard is biased towards diesels but doesn't say it can't be used for petrol engines. So can I go ahead and use it and I am interested in your opinions?

VW 502.00 is the Non-Longlife regime specification oil for gasolene (petrol) cars and is safe to use for the MK5 GTI. Pretty sure they suggested using this spec oil for fixed time and distance servicing if you look in the owners manual if I recall.

As Quantum Platinum Plus has type approval this means that it has been tested by Volkswagen themselves to meet certain criterias such as sludge performance, wear properties, ash output and others. Not surprising really as Quantum is a subsidiary of Volkswagen UK!

I've been using VW 502.00 spec oil for about a year now - Mobil 1 0W-40 FS in my 2005 GTI (115k) and its been running great for me. It's actually a lot smoother on startups (especially in winter) and I don't need to top up that often compared to the VW 504.00 5W-30 longlife oil I was using before. Even did a 1000 mile trip to the Nurburgring and back in 35c heat in the summer and it hardly used oil (just topped up a smidge to my surprise). Pretty much sold on the stuff and recently did an oil change with it again in preparation for winter!

So overall that oil should be fine.  :happy2:

Thanks guys.. I did think that as it had type approval for petrol engines it was probably going to fine but wanted to make absolutely sure.  I couldn't pass up the price at TPS which was basically 11 pounds for each 5l packs. I bought 4 !!!
I don't intend to run it longer than about 7.5k and 10,000 miles per change anyway.

Cheers

I use that oil as well and found the same.  I tend to buy it in bulk when there's deals on, and change it every 3K
