  Also illegal!

I did that years ago in my old Jetta.  150/100W plus 150W mains plus uprated loom and relays     Instant daylight whilst they lasted, which they didn't!
Illegal when (if) caught

Not as great for on coming traffic when you get blinded by them. .

I can’t stand them myself

Yeah the 'Rally' bulbs in my Jetta were ridiculous.  The reflection from traffic cones blinded ME, let alone blinding other people

I've just bought some 2nd hand xenons off ebay.

Not cheap but will be legal come mot time.
Only legal if you have the other bits that are fitted as standard from the factory so don’t be too sure

I bought a set of genuine xenon lights via eBay about a month ago and had them fitted about a week ago, my MOT was on Tuesday last week and the MOT passed with no problems re the lights. I had a look on gov.uk, it would appear the new MOT rules only apply to cars fitted with headlight washers and registered after 01st September 2008

No just the headlights. I believe this is a grey area as there are quite a few mk5 golfs which have retrofitted the xenons. I have previously read if the car has washers fitted then they must be working, if they are not ie lights retrofitted then it shouldn’t be a fail, hence the grey area

And if you can say that you must be ancient !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But to be ancient officially you have to remember where the RAC rally stages in Chester used to start?  :P

Depends where you're from really England, Scotland and Wales that's the case. Northern Ireland you have to have washers and leveling to get xenons

I'm hoping your wrong Willni, mine passed in June with out any auto leveling but it does have the washers 🤔
I don't think Rossimac has auto leveling either.

Depends on where you go for the MOT really, Lisburn never checked mine but they all like their cars. But I did put a dummy rear leveler on the rear to be safe.
