Major service cost
« on: November 30, 2018, 05:21:53 pm »
Hello, I've just received a quote for a major service from my VW specialist on my mk5 GTI. It seems very expensive to me - £451

VW Major service - £165
Mann Air filter -£31.50
Mann Oil filter - £10.88
Mann Frecious Plus Cabin Filter - £36.30
NGK Spark Plug x 4 - £127.12
Labour - £170.50

Total including VAT - £451.56

Any info appreciated! How much should I be paying?

Thanks

We are discussing this in a different thread but for an Indie that is expensive.  VW dealers charge £375 for the same thing.

The cost can be reduced significantly by doing the work yourself, or asking them to use cheaper parts.

For example, you don't need dealer spark plugs.  NGK BKR7EIX are a fraction of the cost and the engine actually runs better on those anyway.  They don't last as long, but you can change them 3 times for the price of 1 set of dealer ones!

Cabin filter - does it need doing?  Inspect yours and if it's not choked with leaves, twigs, rats nests, dead birds and grit, don't change it.

Again with the spark plugs, if they're not worn out, don't change them.  The only reason VW specify them is to reduce misfires, which is part of EU4 emissions controls.  If they're not fouled and the gap is still in tolerance, save your cash.

All I would do is oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter and plugs - if they actually need doing.   You can do all that yourself for way less money.  Just depends how badly you want a stamp in the book.

And £31.50 for the air filter is ridiculous.  Genuine ones from the dealer are £23!

Massive rip off, they are charging you twice for labour in both the service charge and then via separate fee. Is only @£35 and 10mins work to change those plugs.

Way too expensive, what are you paying £165 for service and £170 for labour for and individual parts? A service is parts price plus labour, my indi vw garage does a mk5 major service for £275 including parts, only pay extra if plugs need changing.

That's crazy.
VW have fixed price servicing - £165 for minor, around £350 for major.

Mines getting serviced on Monday for £275 and that's at a well regarded Audi/VW indy.

These are the costs I found on phone / online:
VW £375 (for some reason dealer said my car doesnt get fixed price service at £350);
Vastec £275
Midland VW £235

Cheers for all the info! I'll give them a call and see if there was an error on the quote, if not I'll go else where.
Thanks again!
