New Member, New Car.. My Bargain
« on: May 18, 2020, 10:33:00 am »
Hello ..
How is every one..  I do like to drive..  :driver: A lot!

So i am a 38 year old electrical engineer in Kent. To my count i have had over 100 cars (i get bored), But I have been a lot better a bout keeping cars a lot longer now days.. getting old!

first off. here is my real baby.. My toyota Sprint car

Fitted with a 2zz (same engine fitted to the elise) cannot wait to get back out on track. Built it completely myself.

Anyway.. Due to building the race car to replace my old RX8 racecar which i shared with a friend
&t=
He still has the RX running strong
I havent had a "fun" road car for a while, the wife has a cooper s which is hers, and we have a freelander 2 as a tow car..
I had a Hankering to buy myself another 2.5 focus ST, I had one for nearly 3 years which is a long time for me and i loved it. but i could really justify or afford getting another car

Then my mate messaged me.. "You know my golf, It needs some work, but i need it gone, do you want it"
My reply was " i don't really have a need or the money for it at the moment"
Him "Cheap"
Me "how Cheap?"
Him "a grand"
Me "I'm on my way"

I sort of knew a few bits of the car. but no idea of mileage, true condition work required but it was a mk5 golf gti for a grand.. I wasn't going to say no!

I for some reason thought it was black. I was wrong it is LA7T United grey

Kels had already transferred him the money He cleaned and sanitized the car, I then got there, he left the keys etc by the car for me to collect and i cleaned and sanitised everything (it's a strange ol world) I then drove home to see what i had.
The list goes
New sparks, R8 coil packs, New Maf
Centre section exhaust leak
Kenwood stereo
Ram air induction
18in monza(?) alloys
A Stutter/cough off boost
pretty bad fuel economy
Many dents and scratched
Rusty front wings.
CEl light not up but code read P0171 fault
A very minging car inside
120K miles
MOT untill july
4 different tyres, all good makes, different wear!

So I spent the next day going over the car and cleaning everything..
This is what i was left with
Clay bar

Machine polish

To say i am very happy with my purchased would be an understatment.
My wife is the Vag person, me not so much. She has had loads of mk4s. Including 2x  v6, 3 1.8ts and 2x 150gt tdi's and 2 200k+ fabia VRS's she loves them
I have had a 2x VRS octavias MK1 and MK2, and a mk5 golf gti before, but i never found that one exciting.. This one however i really like it has the start of making a good noise with the Ram air, and where its a bit older and raggidy makes it a bit more fun.

Fire job was sort the stereo. I put a GTI back ground on it, but the mic was above the steering wheel and fell off all the time, and the rear speakers did not seem to work , i only play music through bluetooth

stereo

Out it comes
IMG_20200514_160548 by Pete Mason, on Flickr
checked all the connections for rear speakers everything seemed okay.. strange
Moved the Mic to a place i prefer

Checked the car did have back speakers. Much internet search showed up that kenwood stereos by default will only play bluetooth through front speakers. going into the off option menu and have to change it to all speakers !! how stupid!!
So thats done.

also checked the Maf looking at the splutter there was a small piece of plastic infront of the hot wire. removed that. took for a nice drive yesterday. but no dice. it still splutters a bit off boost. and only getting around 25mpg average

Anyway thats for a seperate technical thread. I have done plenty searching on the 0171 fault. its a mine fild i have a little video so ill bung that up with what i've done..

Thanks for sticking with me this long.

My plans are... new front wings, touch up pen for the scratches
Service and drop the sump to ensure pick up is nice and clean. (no mods needed here is there just a clean)
I am about to carpet clean the seats
sort this stutter out
Refurb the wheels. not sure if to paint the anthracite, white or bronze yet.
Then i can start tuning and playing

cheers

Pete

Nice one - you can’t go that wrong for a grand!!! Once cleaned up it looks alright but yeah get the alloys refurbed and the wings sorted and it will look even better. Enjoy the car

Today's list
Cambelt
Tensioners
Water pump
Cam follower
Pollen filter
Fuel filter
Oil
Oil filter
Sump off
Clean oil pick up pipe
Reseal and refit sump

Just awaiting on the n80 valve (the one hopefully causing my vac leak after it failed test)
Fill it with oil tomorrow and coolant to give time for sump sealant to cure fully

Then fingers crossed I didn't stuff up anything and see if it works .
If not I've got a golf for breaking 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂😂

Brilliant car for the price mate!

Certainly can’t go wrong with that.

Well done :)

Look forward to more progress.

Thanks everyone..
Yeah I'm pleased so far. Took for a run today.. ran very well
Checked long term fuel trims have come down to 6% from 18%. So I'll take that as a win on the n80 valve too

I must say the car looks absolutely gorgeous! Contrary to popular belief, the Mk5 Golf GTI is actually quite a robust and reliable car. However, if they are not maintained properly they can start to develop some seriously expensive problems, so watch out. My first and only other car I have ever owned was a Peugeot 205 GTi. To this day I still regret selling it. The 205 was a car that brought a smile to my face every time I drove it, and annoyed me anytime it would leak, which happened a lot more than it probably should have. At https://www.stanmcnabbchevy.com/new-vehicles/ you can find both new cars and used cars for a fair price and good reputation.
