Drivers window problem
« on: December 23, 2018, 01:09:20 pm »
I have an issue with my drivers window in my 3 doors MK5 GTi which I cant find any answers for.

When I press and hold the window button, the window moves an inch either up or down and then stops. I then have to release the button and press it again for it to just move another inch or so. It will only move an inch at a time.

Sometimes it stops moving at all but does come back after a few moments.

I have tried a new switch and disconnected the battery to no avail.

It doesn't seem to be making any weird noises.

Any ideas?

Try the simple stuff - lubricate window where it runs in the door frame.  May be binding.

On my MK3 when this happened it was a failing window regulator mechanism.  Over time it got worse until it made a grinding noise and just stopped working.

Anyone have any ideas? It seems like its an electrical issue as there are no weird noises, no grinding, the window moves as it should but in small increments.

Maybe some teeth have stripped from the gear drive so that when it rotates it only moves when the teeth engage? Only a guess.

With the car running have you tried holding it down all the way, when it reaches the bottom fully down, holding it for 5 seconds then releasing?

This resets it's memory for the positioning.

I dont dare wind it down an inch at a time all the way to the bottom in case it doesnt go back up again!

Wouldnt disconnecting the battery for a few hours have the same effect?

Yeah that's a good point... not the nicest weather either is it.

I'm not sure if resetting the battery does it - infarct I think that causes a potentially separate (for you) problem of it not knowing where the windows bottom is.
