Hi,

Just had to replace my rack after it was knocking like crazy. I managed to get an AMK unit for a very good price (I know, I know, I should have gone VW, but it really was a great price and I’m super skint) which has resolved the issue and now the car drives very smooth.

I’ve read on here that the correct steering curve may need to be flashed to have the correct GTi weight and feel. First impressions are the steering is perhaps a little lighter than previously, although it might be my imagination and it might be that I now need to have the tracking done.

I understand I can only get this done at VW. Does anyone have an idea if a pattern rack is able to be flashed or can this be done to genuine racks only?

Anyone have an idea of cost, and will be VW be clued up on what I’m asking them to do?

Thanks in advance.

I don’t think they’d reset the copy part tbh

Ask the VCDS gurus

So, update.

I’ve had the tracking done and this has made it very smooth, but even lighter steering! It feels like a Honda Jazz now. Definitely not a GTi feel.

I’ve been to the dealer’s who TBH didn’t have a clue what I was talking about. They asked a tech there who was the most clued up on Mk5’s and he didn’t seem to really know, but recalls something like this being done on a Mk6.

They are happy to have a look, plug it in and see what happens, but I’m hoping someone with knowledge can jump in and explain-in technical terms- what exactly I’m asking them to do. So far I can only explain that I need them to reflash the rack to give it a GTi steering weight profile, explaining that the GTi has a different weight and feel to say, a 1.4.

Can anyone assist in dealer speak so Darren from technical knows what I’m asking him to do?

Cheers!

Your rack should be equivalent to a Gen 2 VW steering rack (the latest mk5 rack gen). You need to reflash the module with the 051 profile, which is what my Ed. 30 had when I had a Gen 2 rack. My friend used the VCP software to reflash the Gen 3 rack I fitted.

Ideal, thanks. Is VCP the same software VW would use for this?

Dealers use ODIS or VAS PC, depending on year.

You can buy cheap emulators online but personally, I would just find a dealer who knows what they're doing.   It's really not difficult.  They connect ODIS to the car, it communicates with the factory and just downloads the files it needs.  A blind Baboon could do it.

I’ve been to the dealers today and they have reflashed the rack- but- they stated there was no option to change the steering profile, only to upload reflash with basic settings. That was the only option available.

Steering has changed and is a little better but is now even lighter! It centres better now and feels more reponsive but it’s definitely a little lighter again.

I’m thinking this is down to the fact it is a pattern rack and am about to give up on this. Which is a shame, as the unweighted steering is kind of spoiling the car for me at the moment.

I know there is a way to adjust the steering weight in VCDS but with mine being an ‘08 plate I believe this feature is unavailable?

I really need to weight up this steering.

Try looking for a retrofitter expert with a VCP cable. He'll delete the current profile and upload the correct one. I've told you the file number for the GTI steering weight profile.

Bumping this. Cheers.

It’s driving me mad having such light steering. Feels totally unweighted.

Can anyone recommend a specialist who could look at this? Otherwise I’m considering keeping my eyes peeled for a refurbed genuine rack.

Cheers but I wouldn’t have the first clue what I was doing.

Buy one and get a garage to fit it.

Ah I thought you meant a VCP cable. Yeah another rack is last resort really.
