Best coilpacks, NOT red.

I'm looking to replace my coilpacks for general assurance/maintenance and for a tune in the future. Judging by the price, I assume the red awesome GTI/ECS tuning coilpacks are cheap knock-offs in red. What would be the best option, preferably in black, Genuine VW ones? or something like NGK?

Best buy the real thing to be comfortable with what you are getting eg Eldor with all the parts numbers printed on. I have these and together with fresh NGK iridium plugs the car ran more smoothly and responsively

It's an easy assumption to make, given how many of them are available to so many aftermarket sellers, but apparently they are genuine R8 coils.  Audi must have accidentally typed 1,000,000 on the order form instead of 100,000.

I sourced mine through AKS and they've been perfect.  The colour is irrelevant as they live under the air box.  The selling point is they are cheaper than the OEM black ones, and easier to get.  Couple of clicks and next day shipping.

I bought the OE R8 NGK red coils from Opie Oils (https://www.opieoils.co.uk/pv-127108-ngk-ignition-coil-u5014-ngk48041-plug-top-coil.aspx) after experiencing a bad misfire. For the same reason- there are a few people online that for some reason think the R8 coils perform better but, they are cheaper. The red always helps, but stuck under the airbox it matters little anyway.

Pay more for OE black ones if you want, but the OE R8 ones will perform at least as good and will cost less.

Bosch made and 4 of these are about the same price as the "R8" ones.
Being pretty anal and pathetic but my coilpacks are on show and it looks nice and clean being all black, coolant and washer fluid lids are all black too.

Personally I will be seeking the OEM red ones in the near future, purely for appearance as my bays exposed too (and so I can tell the kids, that my cars faster than a Lamborghini now  )  but I do understand why you're ideally looking for black. the Bosch ones you've found seem ideal if you ask me.

your engine bays looking nice, have you thought about knocking the oil filler extension off at all? As said my engines exposed too as I have an induction kit, and I found the engine bay looks a lot neater with it off

The red ones do break up the blackness nicely if you have an intake kit!

The OEM red and black coils have 'Eldor' written on them as the brand name, so NGK and Bosch would be copies.  Doesn't matter though as GTI coils are not known for their lifespan, regardless of who makes them!

I have some paperwork with it but no mention of coilppacks.
So perhaps a new set are needed.
Who makes a quality item at a good price ??

I have but i'm not 100% sure how to do it. Just go for a good run, warm it up, and have at it with some slip joint pliers? making sure not to get crap in the oil filler itself....? anyone have a better solution?

yes, that's pretty much it.. it's only glue holding it on.. wedge a rag inside the filler neck, get some large enough channellock pliers and twist the neck.. you can even give it a knock with a hammer.. its a daunting job and sounds ropey as hell.. but once its off, you can literally clean/wipe any of the excess dried glue off.. and jobs a gooden!

NOTE: you may or may not have to get a new oil cap though.. as for some reason, my oil cap didn't want to fit back on, luckily my cousin had a spare oil cap that off his old engine that fitted perfectly. but you can get a new cap for less than a tenner. Not everyone has to replace the cap though! mine was just different and had to be awkward like always! but just bare in mind.. you may need to fly down TPS and grab a new one :) (they're less that a tenner I think)
