New member looking for a Mk5 GTI and Buying Advice
« on: March 03, 2019, 06:08:28 pm »
Hello MK5GTI Forum

Im currently looking for a MK5 GTI ,im at the lowest part of the price range with 3K budget.

From what ive seen at this price range so far im looking at low 100k to 150k mileage

I viewed one yesterday and gave it a test drive and very happy with how it drove /handled and its service history included cambelt a few thousand miles ago, however both front wings were rusty and a patch formed just above the skirt- What sort of price would i be looking at to replace the two front wings ?

One thing i found odd with this engine is a ticking at idle and low revs, sounded like it was coming from the EVAP canister box unit thing  :happy2: just infront of the expansion tank .Putting pressure on the canister stopped the tick.
Would this indicate anything or nothing ?

Thanks for any help in advance

If you are DIY handy then the wings are easy enough to change for brand new ones from eBay or ECP (ebay is about £180 for the pair ready to bolt on)
The evap canister probably just needs replacing, cheap enough! If not that it could be the N80 purge valve (£30)
All these engines tick and sound diesel ish, plenty of posts on here and google telling you what to look out for when buying a mk5 gti, I’m sure you’ve probably already looked into most of that.
Just be aware of the Cam chain and tensioner rattling/ticking when warm and at idle.  It’s a little confusing to zone in and out of the cam chain ticking sound vs the injector ticking sound if you’re not sure which sound is which. Either way, if your DIY handy nothing is really too much on these cars to get sorted! With the help of this forum and google you’ll be ok

Cheers

Decided to go look at another cleaner example the weekend, 2 out of 30+40 cars plus ive viewed online which arent already modified,i probably will go to stage 1 with little supporting mods but id rather do it myself and know which parts and tuners have been used .

Im so -so with DIY, part changes, servicing parts and general services i can handle with bits of bodywork, the big stuff ill leave to the proffesionals really.
Had the old 1.8T in a Bora which i still regret selling as i changed to an RX8 and missed the low down grunt after a month or so.

Ill be having a good read through this forum for extra info on this engine, as the one ive seen did seem to be a confusing bunch of ticks haha

Thanks again
