Edition 30 Issues
« on: March 05, 2019, 01:28:57 pm »
My 2008 plate ED30 got serviced today. It's only got 56000 miles on it and absolutely everything is still as standard.

The garage has reported that there is hole in the exhaust and the only one he can find is from VW and is £700. Thought this was quite steep. Has anyone changed their exhaust recently?

Also need 2 new rear shock absorbers and 2 new rear tyres because the shockys are goosed.

Also needs its cambelt and water pump changed (£550 from VW).

Absolute mare of day Haha. Serves me right for not doing more maintenance on her over the past few years.

You pay for what get

I don’t think that price is unreasonable after all it’s a performance car.

The rear box on my Corrado was £600 ten years ago.

Like... do you trust this information you've been given, have you looked at your car yourself? Sounds suspect to me.

To add my 2p, I wouldn't pay the £700 for a standard system. I'd either source a good condition s/h system, have it repaired, or spend the extra and get a full BCS Powervalve system or Milltek system. Maybe even something budget that wasn't hooligan loud.

I find it surprising that the shocks have gone. What was the car used for, a porn set or farm car?

If the tyres are road legal get yourself Michelin Pilot Sport 4's from BlackCircles.com and get them fitted by a local garage.

Edition 30 #1994 now sold. *cries*

I think i asked a while ago for replacement OEM exhaust for my ED30 in the event it needed replacing. I seem to recall being told that replacement exhausts from VW/TPS were no longer available?
I may be wrong though! Is it worth asking the likes of BCS to see if they can make a direct OEM replacement exhaust?

Cam Belt and Water pump will almost be certainly cheaper at a VAG specialist using genuine parts
Same with the rear shocks.

For the tyres, if you trust ATS, you can get Michelin PS4's for around £83 per tyre (fitted) - see my thread here: https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,119042.0.html

why not just get the hole patched up and buy yourself some time? I'm guessing that it can't be too far gone since you don't appear to have noticed it until the garage pointed it out.

I did exactly this and bought several months of time until I could get my finger in the hole and now I need to get a new exhaust. No amount of filler will fix it now. Saved up for a BCS cat back system and spoke to Nige.... I was sold  :happy2:

Depends where the hole is.  A holey pipe or silencer can be patched up so long as there's ample clean metal around it to weld to.

The problem I've seen with most VAG hybrid mild/stainless systems is the pipe becomes very thin and perforates where it joins the silencer, which is virtually impossible to fix properly, and economically.

For OEM noise levels, I would consider a Tectonics Tuning 2.5" system with dual Borla mufflers.

I'm surprised the exhaust and shocks have gone at 56K though!

In reality i guess mileage doesn't kill exhausts. Short journeys and therefore condensation build up are going to be the killers. Or just time.

The shocks though, that does surprise me. Springs possibly, again due to corrosion. What was their reasoning for the shocks being goosed?
