Scratched windscreen
« on: February 19, 2010, 02:23:28 pm »
I used a scraper on my windscreen the other day as it was froze, just noticed that I now have a few long scratches in the glass  :surprised:

I have run my nail over them and can feel the grove (albeit shallow)... WTF? Can I sort this out without having the screen replaced  :rolleye:

Thanks  :happy2:

I think you can get people that can polish this kind of thing out.

Thats what I was kinda thinking, polish it out... I'll give somewhere like autoglass a ring, I had a chip repaired by them and it was free as Im fully comp so hopefully the same, if not I dont know, really dont want to have the screen changed  :sad1:

You CAN polish out a scratch in glass, but I wouldn't bother for 2 reasons:

1) It's mighty hard work and will require jeweller's rouge to do it properly.
2) It will create low spots that the wiper will no longer be able to clear of water properly. It only takes the tiniest low spot to make using the wipers horrible.

I had a scratch in my rear passenger side window due to vandalism when I bought the car. I just bought a new window from VW and got Autoglaziers to fit it for me. That's the best solution all round

Its best not to polish it for the above reasons(plus its mega mega hard to do it yourself), you can also create shiny parts on the screen, best thing to do is claim on insurance and pay your £50+ excess

The VW front screen glass is considered soft and one shouldn't use a scraper on it...

Most policy's don't count windscreens as a claim.
