Mater does the fault put the engine light on? I know on the american tfsi's if the petrol cap is loose or faulty it can create that fault with a light though.

No mate. I've only seen it about 4 times in the 3 years i've had the car.

If it becomes more frequent i will get the Charcoal Canister replaced

Cheers RR - what does this thing do?  Is it something that needs to be replaced/serviced after a certain number of miles?

I must admit I have never seen it in my car.

I hope you have seen it! You won't get through UK MOT without it.

It filters fuel vapours I think. They don't need to have them in the U S of A.

If you are getting the EVAP fault then check this hasn't happened.

This is why I was getting it and since fixing that it hasn't been back touch wood.

A friend of mine had one on his car go and it killed his mpg and the engine ran really rough. Since replacing it his engine is back to normal. I think he paid about £80 or there abouts for a new cannister.

Check the breather pipe first as that is about £9 to replace. A charcoal canister is about £95

I personally don't think it will have any effect. I had to have mine changed and didn't notice any difference in MPG when it was faulty.

I never noticed any difference with MPG either when I replaced the pipe.

I never noticed any poor running or mpg change when I had the evap fault code but the canister did fix the code. A bad PCV seems to cause a lot of running problems.
