Oil Light ON, What Oil???
« on: September 29, 2010, 09:35:47 pm »
Hey troops, misses came in and says the oil light on the car came on and got a msg sayin check oil level.
so I am guessin I am needing oil, just a couple questions.

I am led to believe my golf is on a longlife service plan, will I need to replace this with long life oil?
Is VW the only place you can buy it, or is there other retailers?

Also do GTIs go through oil, or is there chance there is a leak somewhere?

any advise much appreciated.

5W-30 oil is the oil recommended for both longlife and time&distance. I use castrol SLX as it is approved by VW to their 504 standard.

The oil level has to be very low for the light to come on so you should be checking on a weekly basis as a basic check.

VW state that up to 1litre per 1000km is within acceptable limits.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Propper oil drinkers mate watch out, im going to start a thread about it once ive calculated how much my car is actually using, i reccon its roughly 750ml every 1000 miles, fill it half way up the dip stick, not to the top as if you fill it too the top of the hatch markings it seems to use the top half of the oil much quicker.

Castrol 5-30 for me  :happy2:

Or gobbleplease, do you know anywhere local apart from halfords that stocks the right stuff?
