Project Tornado
« on: May 10, 2019, 02:18:33 pm »
Welcome to my obligatory purchase day post for my 2005 Tornado Red GTI. The post is more a record for me of things I have done to the car but your welcome to read if you have any interest!

Just picked the car up today after a month and a half of searching and I'm well pleased with the purchase, the bodywork (minus the wings) is a step above compared to the others I looked at and although not concourse by any means it is in great shape for a nearly 14 year old car.

Mechanically there is a wee niggle that I intend to look at but nothing serious, it comes with a full service history. No evidence of DV, cam follower or PCV so these will probably be the 1st things I do mechanically.

It has the tartan interior which I love and has just been re-upholstered less than 2 month ago.

For now the plan is to get to the bottom of that small mechanical issue (possibly boost leak), a good detail and enjoy over the bank holiday weekend.

I have a list as long as me arm of things I want to do but all will come in good time!

For now here are some pics

Thanks Cormac!

Judging by the user names we must be about the same age

With the good weather yesterday I have a small update I will get posted at some point later today, not very much but a few odd jobs done yesterday.

So I have been busy over the last week to nine days and have done quite a few things to the car to make it my own. Some might not be to everyones taste but here is a list and some pictures.

Rear wiper delete
LED strip lights in footwells
Cam position sensor
Pioneer head unit with Apple Car Play
Interior trim vinyl wrapped red

So tomorrow will the DV repacked as I suspect that is the source of a boost leak and was going to upgrade it anyway. At the same time it will have the oil pick up changed and an oil and filter change as I had an oil pressure warning and is probably a good preventative service measure. Also waiting on cam follower to arrive as there is no evidence of it having been down in the past.

I like the radio upgrade. I have an RNS510 but would actually consider changing to that Pioneer one that has Car Play integrated. Does it interact with the MFD at all? I have a MkVI so mightn't behave the same in yours, I dunno.

Nice to see another member from Belfast about as well.

Is that wireless Apple CarPlay or is there a wire from the rear of the stereo that you’ve routed out to the front somewhere?

So its been a while since I have updated this! Although the questions are probably irelavant now I will still answer them.

Is that wireless Apple CarPlay or is there a wire from the rear of the stereo that you’ve routed out to the front somewhere?

No the cable is plugged into the rear of the HU and routed out just below.

It doesn't interact at all to the MFD and had to run a switched live from the fuse box to bypass the canbus.

After a summer of some neglect and the car being off the road for 4 months I will put together an update in the next couple of days, unfortunately nothing exciting and all maintenance related.
