Creaking Under Braking
« on: May 16, 2019, 09:53:32 am »
What started off as an internittant creak/knock has turned into a full time creaking noise in my mk5 golf.

At first I thought it was suspension creaking of some kind, because that's what it sounds like to me. However as it's developed and become consistant it has become apparent that it's only under braking that noise occurs. Specifically light braking at medium to low speeds. At high speed you get no noise what so ever, same with heavy braking.

It's booked in next week for my garage to have a look at, it's just bugging me in the meantime. It really does sound awful at times!

This noise is back!

I replaced the discs and pads which seemed to fix it for 6 months or so, but now it's back with a vengeance.

Hard braking doesn't cause it, just light low speed braking. It also creaks if you rock the car with the hand brake on, but doesn't with the hand brake off.

It's got to be brakes right? I'm thinking just replaced the calipers then it's got to fix it??

I had a similar noise that went away when I replaced the control arms and fitted ALK. The rear bush on one of the arms looked fine on the car but when it was taken off the bracket rotated 90⁰.

Brake creaking is due to the caliper slide pins not being lubricated/dry and also dirty.

I periodically removed one at a time, clean, lubricate and refit.........noise then disappears.

I haven't heard it for ages now but I bet it comes back at some point.  I agree with the guy above, because when the pads are cleaned and lubed the noise goes away, but does come back eventually.

I am considering a rear brake refurb when it comes back and see if that keeps it away. Plus the paint has flaked off a bit on the near side so it will make them look better too
