Mk5 GTI - TLC

So I thought i'd do a quick post to report on progress with the project mk5 gti I got for my mrs.

I've had the following work completed:

oil/filter
fuel filter
pollen filter
reverted to standard airbox with new filter (from cheap ebay DIY induction system)
pre-cat delete
Rev G DV
New cam follower
NGK BKR7EIX plugs
gearbox oil

New OEM Ball joints, drop links and CV boots + Superpro ALK.
Finally a proper 4 wheel alignment.

Wow the car drives well now, you'd never think driving it that its a 12 year old car with 111k on the clock!

Wheels being rerfurbed and a full multi stage detail next month to remove the pesky swirls/light scratches detracting from the tornado red paint currently, and i think that'll be project complete... Oh and tinted windows I still haven't got done! making do with an awful attempt of a window blind currently!

I've just bought an S3 8P for my next project so this has proved good practice with the 2.0 TFSI engines!

Why did you change the gear oil? I was told from VW that's it's gear oil for life and shouldn't be replaced?
I changed mine thinking it would fix my clutch rumble and gear notching. Didn't make any difference for me  :(

BMW say the same, empty the oil out and it looks like black, new fluid is golden. Where's the logic in "shouldn't be changed"?

No such thing as a lifetime oil i'm afraid.. good practice to change any oil in a component with moving parts.

Gearbox oil replacement cost me £50 at a local VW specialist and has made the gear change significantly smoother..

As stated BMW claim the same, they do for their diff's aswell.. Nonsense, i'd rather spend £50 on replacing the oil every few years than replacing a gearbox or diff.

Maybe 'lifetime' really refers to the life of the warranty rather than the car.........

Yeah I agree with colesey and mc.
More than likely the lifetime of warranty! But I’d never chance leaving the same oil in a car for the ages these GTIs are at now! Change them, have heard many good reports or smoother gear changes etc. Even if not, at least you know your gears are rolling in cleaner oil.

I changed the oil in mine but nothing sorted a failed gearbox so bit the bullet and a new one was fitted

Noooo not on its way out. Its the common warped flywheel and either clutch cylinder or release fork.
I only do 6k miles a year so not gonna fork out 1k on a flywheel and clutch fitting just for a notchy gear change. Cars only worth 3k so would be dead money spending that. Will wait till it's totally shagged then get a mk6 golf r

I think now the only thing the car is missing in terms of drive is uprated ARB's, but come september when my mrs goes back to work i'll hardly ever drive it, and she certainly doesn't drive it hard enough to appreciate a set of ARB's so it'll be kept as is.

And by the way I mean in terms of a suitable reliable daily driver, I know there's a hell of a lot more that could be done..

Small to do list remains:

- B pillar back factory style tints
- Refurb alloys
- Small paint repair (crease in rear door going into rear quarter)
- Multi stage correction detail.

By time that list is complete the car will owe me £6000 so there's no way I'm putting another £500 in for ARB's (fitted).

But I do think we've got a cracking car now which will also look the part once  the cosmetic bits are completed in the next month or 2

I picked up a mint Mk5 via a trade in my son did as he works for Audi. It’s my daily driver as my 800hp CLS63 AMG S was being used, hence the Mk5 is perfect. I’ve also spent a few beer tokens on parts and also Revo STG2. But the first thing I did, albeit the car has a FVWSH, was the DSG OIL & Filter change. VW state every 45k so it was just ready as last one was done @ 90k. Great car and drives like new. I love it and so pleased it’s now as I want it and has the mods to compliment it too
