Bluetooth Install new mk5 owner
« on: May 28, 2019, 03:13:37 pm »
Hi there,

I am getting a mk5 gti 2007 tomorrow, it has satnav (Black with silver buttons, think the model number starts with 1k)
I was wondering if it is possible to add BT to this. I also have the MFSW with phone button.

Cheers all

Welcome!

Your standard unit is likely an RCD300 - not easy or econmical to fit bluetooth. Much better off going for a later VW unit e.g. RCD330+ (go for revE firmware) or RNS315 are popular choices. Both of these have bluetooth built in to the unit.

RCD 330+ VW unit for asian market where some newer cars are still built on the mk5 platform:
-bluetooth
-aux
-usb
-apple car play
-SD card (i think?)
-built in mic for phone calls (works surprisingly well)
-doesn't play so nicely with highline clocks or steering wheel buttons (i dont have these anyway)

RNS315 - EU VW unit:
-Bluetooth
-Sd
-Aux
-built in NAV
-DAB radio
-need to wire in a mic for phone calls
-play nicely with highline clocks/sterring wheel buttons (i think, dont have them)

other units are avaliable  :signLOL:

I had the 315 and moved on to the RCD330+. Never looked back but both are good units. A google will bring up fitting guides and things to watch out for (clue: canbus gateway). They integrate nicely with the car, changing brightness in the dark, altering sounds level with speed etc etc.

As an aside - i thin 99% of components on the mk5 gti start "1k..." as 1k is the chassis type for the mk 5 platform  :happy2:

@f00glee can you use the 330 with the MDI unit in the armrest?

All my stuff plays off the iPod in the armrest and I hate having cables hanging out the front of the unit - just looks too messy!

Not sure to be honest, my car doesn’t have the armrest connector. I just use a small ~15cm cable from the front of the unit to my phone in a brodit mount Just off to the left.

Have seen people mod them to disable the front usb and solder a cable into the back to route a connection elsewhere. Seems a bit of a faff though - soldering a wore directly onto the PCB inside. I’m also fussy about having cables flopping about but find what I’ve done to be nice and neat.

Is there any OEM unit that has Bluetooth that's plug and play and doesn't require a new/coded canbus?
