Engine Codes
« on: June 11, 2019, 03:31:29 pm »
Hi guys, hoping someone can clear something up for me!

Just been looking through the Awesome GTI website at some bits I hope to purchase soon. I noticed when checking for fitment they list engine codes such as "EA113" & "EA888 gen 1" which has confused me. I looked online and this just seemed to through up even more variations of the mk5 GTI engine.

I've checked my engine code and the only thing I can see is "BWA" which I was aware of to begin with anyway, but the above codes or anything even close I cant seem to find.

My golf is 06 plate and the codes I am aware of for my car are BWA engine and 1k as part of the VIN, the above engine codes have left me worried that I will buy the wrong parts.

anyone able to clear this up?

cheers!

EA113 and EA888 are the engine "families" if you like. EA113 for mk5 GTI and EA888 for mk6 GTI (broadly speaking - there are some crossovers).

Within each of these families there are different engine codes, AXX and BWA found in the mk5 gti and BYD in the ED30 are all EA113 engines. Curiously so is the CDL in the mk6 R and ed35, even though the mk6 gti uses engine codes from the EA888 family.

Take a look at this:

Scirocco R got the CDL as well!  I reckon VW didn't have a high performance EA888 flavour at the time, so they had to stick with the old EA113 CDL war horse for the cooking models.

American MK5s got gen 1 EA888 engines from 2008, which means gen 3 EA888 Golf R engines will drop straight in  :happy2:

Here in America the MK5 GTI is EA113-BPY for '06 through mid '08...and yes...mid-year 2008 the GTI switched to the EA888 and there are like four or five different Cxxx codes for that 2.0t TSI.
