Remap!! Or sought cam chain?
« on: January 02, 2018, 05:37:28 pm »
As title suggests, I’m basically ready to go Stage 1+ with R-Tech after contacting them..mods are :- precat deleted, millers Nanodrive 5w40, new Rev G diverter valve, new PCV valve and cam follower & pipercross panel filter.

R-Tech to map and fit Autotech HPFP at same time, but I crnt get past thinking about getting my cam chain and tensioner being sorted first (plus cam adjuster if needed) car has Cam belt & waterpump change on 65k but no history of new cam chain and car has just ticked over 80k miles

Can I ask why you feel the cam chain is needed? Is it noisy?

Not really, not too bad at all compared to reviews I’ve read & vids on YouTube I’ve seen...car is quiet’ish once warm! First cold start has a 2-3 second what I’d describe as a chain slap like it’s not tensioned properly (this started since bad weather kicked in)..after that first start though car is fine and starts on the button until cold start following day

Probably me being over cautious, just thought I’d see what others input would be & hopefully sway my decision  :happy2:

I wouldn’t say it needs doing before your remap but I would get it done in the future just for proactive maintenance. The noise I got before I did mine was like a ticking noise when the engine was warm and sat inside the car.

Yeah it’s silent when warm...inside car & outside car, it was just the cold start noise that got me worrying and the struggle to fire on that first start but seems this is also a common problem on mk5 GTi

Never owned a car that fires so badly lol

Decided cam chain & tensioner first, gunna get a quote from VW Doncaster or if anybody knows anyone else locally..got Statller at Sheffield also if anyone has used them and have an idea of cost

Then I’m thinking this....https://m.imgur.com/cBg6coE7 plus R-tech map & HPFP upgrade  :driver:

Sort the cam chain first and get the engine healthy before a remap that will strain the engine.

Surely if there is no audible sign of a cam chain issue starting the engine would be considered healthy?

R-Tech wouldn't map a car if they thought you were going to drive around the corner and the engine was going to implode

Some good points made here. Have you considered that the noisy injectors could be the source of this. Looking at TR Hamzas vid of R-Tech testing and clearing his S3 injectors made me realise just how noisy they are!!

Cheers
