£249 is a pretty good price, its a 2-3 hour job.  How old is your car, it needs a cambelt at least every 5 years anyway.

then perhaps start a thread on here of everyone who has had the same problem and use it to get the job done under goodwill.  you might at least get some monney off.  Just dont use VW Warrington (see my post)

If you wanted to eliminate the alternator belt simply remove it and start the car cold.

Id be keen to try this to at least determine if its the cambelt, or alternator belt as per Russ experienced.

However i havent a clue about mechanical stuff. Where exactly is the alternator and belt, and how can it be removed?! Is it straight forward?

Uh oh.

Was the cambelt issue mentioned at all when you had the car in? Did they check it?

if the sales man has any common sense he will sort it for you otherwise you need to look in to telling him you want you money back. there are laws and regulations that he must behold otherwise i wouldnt be very happy with him or the branch for selling a car that they didnt check thoroughly.

I had the same thing nearly a year ago and was lucky that they did any thing in the end but persevered and got it fixed under warranty.

its a common problem with these engines across the range (audis, seats, skoda's all suffering the same) so i suggest you say to them, not that you read something on the internet, but you are concerned that the car you bought isnt in working order and its nothing to do with the alternator they replaced but could be something else, like a friend said it was the cam belt and tensioner. if they dont sort it properly then they will be breaching the terms of the warranty.

My local dealer is doing the belt kit fitted for £249 on special offer at the minute. However, im reluctant to go ahead if the noise i hear is perfectly natural

care to tell which dealer? JCT Bradford will match or beat any genuine quote.

Just for the record I had the chirping in my Ed 30 and today it was changed with with no question under warranty they also did the roller, tensioner and water pump at the same time (the water pump was not originally planned but when they had the rest off they noticed it was weaping from the seal.)

So overall a result especially as it winds the time I need to pay for it back a to 5 yrs or 60k or whatever the book says.
