Coolant Leak
« on: August 26, 2019, 10:40:42 pm »
Picked up a coolant leak, from what I suspect is this pipe with the split hose - you can see the damp patch to the left of the jubilee with the little splits.

Gonna get the pipe changed by my mechanic tomorrow, but I'm just wondering, what's the pink gunge and what can I do to prevent this? Is this the stuff they say is the gunge when you use normal water vs deionised water?

The pink residue is antifreeze, that's why the water is pink....

if you open the expansion tank when the engine is cool/cold you'll see how pink the coolant is.

Yeah I get that, I've been topping it up over the past week with pink coolant. Just, the gunge around the pipe looked a little off to me, is all.

If this seems normal, then I'm happy. Hopefully get the pipe work sorted and it'll be right as rain!

Cheers for the replies.

Perfectly normal mate don’t worry. The pink gunge is literally just dried out coolant. Nothing to worry about. Replace the split hose and you’ll be good as new :-)

Cheers, still learning here - had tried to google it but couldn't find anything to tell me otherwise!

Mechanic pulled the pipe up over and past the split, tightened the jubilee and it holds nicely again. All sorted!

He also replaced a CV joint (again) for me while I coded in a couple of new injectors on a Skoda Octavia.  :happy2:

Nice one mate, tbf I didn’t even think of shortening the pipe. If it fits fine and doesn’t stretch much then why not.
