Timing Chain faiure on Mk7 GTI/R

(1/2) > >>

Upperoilcan:
Going to be in the he market for a new motor in the new year and have had my eye on either a MK 7 GTI or an R.

I was having my Scirocco serviced today and got chatting to one of the mechanics who put me off both cars as he told me that the timing chains on both models are sh*te and need re doing every few years at a cost of a couple of grand!

Is this true? Anyone on here had any issues with their timing chain?

Cheers.

First I’ve heard (but not fully up to speed with the mk7 tbh) but I was under the impression that the mk7 engines was one of the best designs for the TSI?

Total Rubbish, the MK7 GTI and R are great cars. Where was the mechanic working ? Quick
Fit ?

garrardrj:
Niki at R Tech has never heard of one either . I think your mechanic is perhaps confusing a 6 with a 7. There were issues with the Mk6.

Thanks for the replies guys,it was an independent VW garage that said they are prone to coming loose as opposed to complete failure (My bad) I was also told that it was 2k to sort  :surprised:

And R Tech is where I took my Mk5 for a remap a good few years ago and they know their stuff!
