Recommended engine oil?
« on: October 18, 2019, 12:43:46 am »
Hi guys, I don't have a service manual so was wondering what the manufacturer recommended engine oil is for the mk5 GTI? Unmodified.

The previous owner said he always used Halfords 5w-30 (I think) but in the past I've used Catrol Edge FST stuff.... what's best for these engines?

Cheers

A lot of people will say Millers nanodrive 5w40, it's expensive.

As long as it's a quality oil 5w30 or 5w40 you'll be fine.

Thanks guys, would you say 5w-30 or 5w-40 is better? My engine's pretty smooth already but does one quieten it down more than the other?

Mobil 1 0W40.

Second to that I would use Quantum platinum 5W40 which is pretty cheap if cost is an important factor.

The Millers stuff is overpriced nonsense.  Just use a normal, high quality oil and change it frequently.  The end.

I’m not sure it’s nonsense, but any claims are hard to test or prove.

The way I see oil is that it’s cheap... even at ~55quid for the millers stuff to change the oil in these.

There are quite a few interesting dyno tests on the efficacy of Millers NT.

There are quite a few interesting dyno tests on the efficacy of Millers NT.

There are also a few interesting reports about the additive falling out of suspension and forming clumps in the container.  Probably best to give it a vigorous shake and use a sieve.  You don't want that stuff clogging oil ways.  That's why OEMs don't use particulate oil additives.
