Extremely poor MPG
« on: November 09, 2019, 02:20:38 pm »
My GTI is getting very bad MPG im getting about 17 to 18 MPG in town this is london in heavy traffic  and on the motorway I can get about 31MPG max that is me being very careful and cruising  at 70mph I have also noticed a nosie when im accelerating its like a hissing sound im not sure if its a boost leak I have a K&N induction kit so not sure if its that or if it is a boost leak but really struggling to get over 17MPG in london When i brought the car i was told it may have a stage one Remap and it does have a piston diverter valve think its the D version what could be causing me to get 17mpg?

I get around 16-18mpg around town I don’t know if thats normal or not, the only mod is a ramair intake that is it all stock apart from that.

So if it is normal considering your car is stage 1 as well doesn’t seem too bad.

Your in town mileage sounds about right but you should be able to get 40mpg cruising at 70. My car is also stage 1 but with Vis hpfp.

Town figures sound about right, especially heavy traffic. Not often have I seen 40mpg when cruising on the motorway, 35mpg is more about right for me.

Same. The GTI isn't very efficient in heavy traffic. I get less than 20mpg when doing the school runs as well. To consistently pull 40mpg I'd have to be doing around 60mph I reckon. 30 - 35mpg is the norm on longer runs the way I drive :)

That said, if you're sure you have a problem, maybe check/change the EGR valve. If it's on the way out it could be causing increased fuel consumption.

Exactly the same for me. Ive only ever saw 40mph when I did a 54mile journey at circa 60mph.

I've been wondering about my MPG recently, I don't think I've ever seen better than 34MPG on a very gentle run. A tank of fuel usually gets me around 300 - 350 miles. I'm in no way leadfooted and the car has a Bluefin stage one on it and is totally standard otherwise. Does this seem reasonable?

The best I have seen from my car (k03 revo stage 1) on a long motorway run to catch the car ferry in Poole was 42mpg. That was fully loaded in light traffic in summer with a decent average speed. Shell VPower, 35psi in the tyres.

I’ve not seen anywhere near that on a full tank is that including motorway driving too? Best I’ve seen on a full tank is around 220 with Tesco momentum. But then again as much as I try not to I end up putting my foot down

Over 5 years of ED30 ownership in standard and tuned trims, it's averaged 28mpg. That's a mixture of town driving, fast B roads and motorways.  Everything is spot on in the VCDS logs, so it's just how they are....and my driving

My R32 delivered 26mpg very consistently, no matter how hard or gently I drove it, so a 2mpg improvement for 70 more lbft and 60 more ponies isn't bad at all.

The MK7 and 7.5 are apparently a lot better on fuel.  According to a lot of owners, mid to high 30s being easily achievable as a long term average....for the GTI that is.  Not sure about the R.

No one buys a GTI for mpg anyway.  That's what the GTD is for

Stage 2+ MK5 GTI Owner - Pretty much only drive in city, loads of stopping and starting, hills etc. Never get over 15MPG, £40 at least a week. When on motorway since I’ve been mapped I managed to get 40MPG which was a big improvement but MPG has worsened with the type of driving I do (only city)

Before mapping MPG used to average around 18MPG with same style of driving but hey I’m loving it so defo worth it 👍🏼
