Checking CAN Gateway
« on: November 10, 2019, 12:05:57 pm »
Hello, Im upgrading my head unit to the later RCD330. I'm aware I may need to change the CAN Gateway in order to stop the battery drain.

HOWEVER, I've also read that at some point they crossed over to the new CAN Gateway and as mine is a later MK5 I may already have this. This would be ideal as although the cost of upgrading isn't the issue, I don't have access to VCDS so would need to find someone....

Is there anyway I can check what CAN Ive got before I start? Failing that, once the Head Unit is installed, is there anyway of knowing wether its draining the battery other than waiting for the battery to die? Will it turn on with no ignition if the CAN Gateway is too old for example to confirm that the upgrade is needed?

Thanks

@kpowell911 VCDS would be the easiest way but the other option is taking the gateway out.

Where are you based? Might be able to find someone local to give it a quick scan?

I think you will be ok with that, more so if it’s late 07.

July 07, so earlyish.

If i put the unit it, how will I know its draining the battery? Will the unit turn on with no ignition? How long does it take to kill the battery? I just want to know so I can test it as I dont always use my car

If you leave it in the car overnight there’s a chance that the battery could be drained by the following morning. Depends on health of battery to start with.
July 2007 I think is borderline whether you will be affected, afraid I don’t know the exact cut off date, if you have a search of past threads on here you may find the info.

I've put the head unit, it works flawlessly which is great, but Ive not bolted anything down and Im going to leave it till Saturday and see.

However, Im able to turn it on without the key in the ignition so Im guessing I need to change the Gateway..... I'll see.

Im in Birmingham, what's the best way of getting this done and what sort of money should it cost?

Thanks

Looks like I need it. Can anyone recommend someone to supply and fit one in the Birmingham area? If so how much should I expect to pay?
