Fuel smell in cabin
« on: November 10, 2019, 09:31:27 pm »
Hi all,

So my gti wasn't getting to temp, so took to my local VW specialist who agreed it was a knackered thermostat and replaced. Since then, I've noticed a smell of fuel in the cabin and sometimes around the engine bay outside. I'm not seeing any less fuel economy etc. But wondered if there's maybe anything they could have knocked while replacing the thermostat which could cause a minor leak/vapour escape?
Thought I'd see if you guys knew of any possibilities before I take it back as it could totally be coincidence!

Might be worth checking the charcoal canister and piping to/from it -  this sits right behind the drivers side headlight.

Though this doesn't need to be fully removed for a main thermostat swap, I did lift it up an out of the way for access when doing my thermostat. This stresses the pipes and so you could have a split/dislodged connection on one of these?

The canister captures fuel vapours from the fuel tank and carries them to the inlet to be burnt off so would be a prime suspect for leaking fuelly smells if something's damaged.

Thanks f00glee! I'll check that this weekend. Sounds like a good place to start.
