ok dougle, well always happy to give advice, its also fairly easy.  Where abouts are you based when your not in Germany?  as if your local then will be happy to come out and help along with my trusty vag cable and netbook! im normally south east london way near bromley or over gloucester or farnham way on the weekends.

So to summarise,

I have a 2005 DSG GTi - with no MFSW but the plastic panel things are there.

If I bought a new steering controller, slip ring & MFSW with DSG paddles, I could get the lot coded in to work?

Or if I wanted the cheap option, just buy the buttons to make it MFSW? (But the wiring may not be there, even though I have DSG but no paddle shifts?)

So at the moment do you have DSG paddles or not?  as every wheel has the blanks but some of them are just plastic without the cut-out for the controllers.  To be sure you will need to remove the air bag and have a look.  If you dont I have a paddle shift R36 wheel with paddle shifters that can be converted into MFSW with paddle shift.

What's an R36? Does that look the same as the GTi one mate?

its the passat equivalent with the slightly larger displacement engine, it is a slightly different wheel but looks good I was going to fit it but decided not to change from standard look.

And it currently only has the black plastic blanks as the buttons migrated there way over to my GTI wheel, its obviously a little rounder, but still slightly flattened, and is a little thicker than the GTI wheel so feels a little sturdier and grippier in the hands, let me know if you'd be interested.

I have got a 2006 with DSG and Highline so should mine be a straight swap near enough.

As long as you have DSG paddles on the wheel then you can replace the existing black plastic (which has circuitry behind it to pass the paddle single on through a controller) with the buttons, and these will work, having highline isnt a pre-requisite but it will help to obtain full functionality from all of the buttons on the right hand module.

Yes forgot to say I have the paddles aswell so everything should be there,this was the only extra the car didnt have that I was looking for but was a low mileage one so was willing to forgo the MFSW because of that , is good to know that its able to be fitted.

MortyGTTDi fitted my MFSW buttons in about 10 minutes on Sunday. No coding necessary, they just went on 'plug & play'. I have DSG 08, midline, RNS510. They are £70 a side from the stealer, or trawl the Fleabay & you may be lucky. Be aware of the pre 2006 and 2006 & later variants. Plenty of threads about them on here, a search will point you in the right direction.

Bottom line, an easy mod (Thanks to Darren) and worth every penny

totally understand  mate, i bought it and was really impressed with the look, but chnaged my mind about installing it, also re-sold some R32 highline clocks I had got, but switched the buttons over. 

And it really is very easy the most daunting thing is disconnecting the airbag but it all went well.

I'd be too scared it would just go off randomly! lol I was worrying fitting a microphone cable in the A-pillar cause I kept thinking that would set the airbag off!!!

I think you would have to do something faily severe to set the airbag off, and thats why you disconnect the battery, suppose the biggest issue is if you leave something disconnected and your air bag doesnt work.  But you should be fine, the a pillar cable run is worse, as the airbag is more exposed in that location, the wheel airbag is much better packed up and easier to handle.

For example I did it one evening in 15 minutes with a torch and a shaving mirror.
