Should this be changed preventatively? If so when?

Depends on if its very noisy on the right hand side as you look at the engine. poor oil change history can make it worse and so can lots of short trips even after 50k miles based on some feedback in this forum. I bought mine Eddy 30) at 90k and it sounded awful but a garage said they all sound like that. I thought ...  hmm okay... and lived with it for a few thousand but after that I decided to get it done. Night and day really, idle was much better, noise was still there but significantly reduced especially when hot. Apparently there is a way to detect the 'slack' using VCDS using block 93? and looking at the Cam Phase position bank 1. Anything bigger than about plus or minus 5 degrees may be time to replace. Some even say change anyway at 100k as 'preventative'.
Stage 1 2007 Black Eddy  #1000 - VCDS Hex+Can (Novice coder). H&R springs, newish Bilstein B4's. Gen 3 Steering rack, Helix organic.  The car is *always* work in progress fixing and upgrading things.
