Noticed today there was alot of sludge.

Booked in at VW next week to check as still under warranty.

Little on the dipstick as well.

Serviced in Dec 09 by VW.

Little water used out of expansion tank but no more than usual I think.

Head gasket or because of short journeys/low mileage?

They reckon they havent had one with head gasket problems.

What can they do to check this?

Cheers

Cossy - This is pretty normal of Golf's so don't worry. Please see my post "Running on Amrosia Custard", as I've had the same issues. I was told by VW that it is due to small journey's and the oil not heating up correctly and moisture is not burnt off getting into the oil. Go for a long drive and you'll see it reduce then go completely. Mine was also under warranty, so I asked VW to do a compression test to make sure it wasn't the head gasket...all came back well, so now I have an excuse to got for a long burn at the weekends......It also is worse in the cold weather... :drinking:

Let us all know what the dealer thinks of the issue and make sure you ask for a compression test as it will put your mind at ease that it's not a head gasket issue ! :happy2:

There have been a few threads on this recently and all seems normal if the car doesn't get much use!

Seems the norm mate, don't worry to much, although in 2 years mine has not used a drop of coolant, how much has yours used ?

Just to bump an old thread and not start a new one.  I've noticed the car seems to blow white smoke under heavy acceleration.  I checked the oil cap today and there was absolutely loads of white creamy stuff.  I've done a search on here and noticed that it's a common thing if the car doesn't get much driving and it has been in the garage for 4 weeks (I've now had the car back about 2 weeks but not done many miles.)  But the white smoke is terrifying me.

Sounds like the head gasket to me given the white smoke as well?

Mine's worse than that!I do lot's of small trip's to work and back and i'm fed up of this cold weather, when I first saw mine my VW specialist laughed his head off and said all MK5 Gti's do it when the engine does'nt get up to full temp.

Yeah like I say it's the white smoke bit that's worrying though.  Doesn't matter about the actual speed you're going it's under heavy acceleration you can see white smoke in the rear view mirror which surely can't be good

are you using water ? Or oil ? If not don't worry if the white smoke is from water you would be losing it ,could just be cold weather making it look worse

Try giving it a good clean off then a nice long drive (Preferably when ambient temperature is reasonable) then check again.

How long did it take to get that sludged up???

Here is one for you (bearing in mind the usual "Short trips" answer).
I have just passed 69000 miles in the Pirelli.
I live 40 miles from work, so 80 miles a day, 5 days a week (usually with a blast on the way home when I can).
I still get mayo on the filler cap when the weather is cold and damp!

My experience was exactly as the above post, still got the mayo for the whole of the winter a few years ago despite long runs. It cleared up in the Spring and never returned the following winter. I personally have a suspicion it was the quality of the oil.

Yeah like I say it's the white smoke bit that's worrying though.  Doesn't matter about the actual speed you're going it's under heavy acceleration you can see white smoke in the rear view mirror which surely can't be good

I would be concerned with this if the car is using water, if not then it could be concentration in the exhaust or more likely condensation in the air caused by the sudden release of lots of hot gases into the cold air when you accelerate hard.
