Car won't start (messing up with headlights)
« on: December 31, 2019, 05:58:16 pm »
Hi all,

First of all let me appologise for the long story as I wanted to put as many information as possible even though some of them might not be relevant.

My car won't start after I was messing up with my headlights trying to install an LED kit and changing the W5W sidelights.

Everything started when I was trying to fit the H7 Philips Ultinon LED (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07C5RMKFW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share) that is designed to be used on reflector headlights. To fit the LED I bouth the Tomall H7 LED holder (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B074ZSMM75?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share). I managed to power on the LED but I had to keep the holder twisted with my hand otherwise the holder would twist backwards and the LED would power off. As the holder doesn't attach firmly in the headlight socket, the LED would be moving up and down in the headlamp so I gave up for now.

I then went to replace my MTEC's W5W sidelights for the Philips X-tremeVision (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00OYT1322?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share). When I turned ON the lights the side bulbs were flickering for a few seconds and then powered off. I switched the lights OFF and ON again and had the same problem. Then I connected one of the MTEC's back and it didn't work. I disconnected the other Philips that I left connected, disconnected the MTEC, connected the MTEC again and it worked. I then decided to try the Philips again but this time around I switched the ignition OFF and ON again and then I started hearing clicking noises from the engine bay like someone was turning ON and OFF a light switch several times. I disconnected the Philips sidelights and put the MTEC's back and they were flicking and the clicking noises continued. I then removed the MTEC's and left the car without sidelights. I turned the ignition OFF and ON again and I didn't hear the clicking noises from the engine bay anymore but I could hear them from inside the cabin and the footwell lights were ON and OFF. They were not flickering but rather ON and OF very quickly. The hazard light buton didn't iluminate when pressed nor any of the indicator lights. I decided to check the reverse light but when I tried to turn the car ON to put in reverse the car didn't crank, no noises, nothing. The radio doesn't work, headlight flashing lights and indicators also don't work. The dipped beam switch is always on the coming home feature and if I turn the ignition ON the lighs turn on even though nothing else works and the car make no noises when I try to start apart of the constant clicking noises inside the cabin.

One of the mistakes I made was working with the lights with the ignition ON. Sometimes while I was testing the lights the dipped beam switch was set to always ON making the lights to be powered as soon as I connected them. I am not sure if this could have caused the problem.

The car is a 2005 DSG model (stock).

Thank you in advance guys.

Thank you for replying.

I also suspected it could be a fuse. I didn't have time to look at the fuses as there was not enough light. I will try to dig in more info about which fuse I should be looking at.

Thanks.

I will have a look at this tomorrow as I am still recovering from the NYE drinks.

I think a flat battery would be too much of a coincidence since everything always worked spot on until yesterday. But I am just guessing and will only know when I have a proper look tomorrow.

Thank you all.

it wont take long for the battery to go flat if you have had the head lights on for a while

Thanks for letting me know Andy.

I didn't know the battery could go so quickly. I hope this will be the problem. I will find out in a few hours.

I am glad to say that the problem was a flat battery.

Thank you for all the help. A special thanks to @Andy and @GVK.
