Iphone 11 in 2013 Golf

I have a new iphone 11 and want to use it if possible in my 2013 Golf. I have the MDI lead with a 30 pin to lightning adaptor that i use with my ipod touch and this works fine. If I plug the iphone in it charges but nothing else.
If I buy an MDI to lighning will this output my music from my iphone and allow me to control my iphone music or is it a case that the head unit in the 2013 golf is now too old to work with current iphones?
