Would be interested to know this also. I know my thermostat needs changed and was wondering whether to lump this work with the belt and water pump change since that is due for me later this year.

Could do the thermostat and the coolant temp sensors whilst the coolant has been drained.

I agree, saves draining the coolant twice.

Plus with the engine lifted and alternator out you will have half a chance of getting to the thermostat I did my belt, water pump and thermostat a few weeks ago and it took 2 of us 12 hours on a four poster ramp in a fully equipped workshop!!!
Change both temp sensors/ switches too whilst coolant is out:-)

What interval should the timing belt/pump be done?

Is it 4 years or 5 years?

Mileage?

VW say 4 years whereas Audi used to say 5 years for the same engine. I cover low mileage and follow the latter. You will better know what use your car gets wrt mileage / typical revs / temperature extremes where you live.

Last owner did the belt at 68000 miles in 2016 there's 83400 miles 4 years I'm gonna hold onto it for a couple of years so it's going to need doing anyhow

Mine needs doing this year too, so I called VW Breeze in Poole today to ask their price..... After going to check if it was still covered by the VW Fixed Pricing Schedule (older car 2005), she confirmed it was, and cost would be £549 all in, to include water pump. How does this compare? I wonder how much longer VW fixed pricing will apply for? Anyone know (I ought to have asked)?

(Just heard Mark King of Level 42 doing his fav tracks, on R2  and they just played Radar Love by Golden Earring, ha ha, great, took me back, time-warp fashion to my youth...Happy days....)

£549 is crazy.  The genuine parts are less than half that.  Did mine in 4 hours on axle stands.  No special tools required.  It's an easy job.  Half a grand for that job is scandalous if you ask me, especially when you consider VW were doing the same job for £349 on special a few years back.  Not many Indies could compete with that, using genuine parts.

As for the interval, it's 4 years or 60K on VWs.

Going by Audi's/T'internet's 5 years/80K is a gamble I'm not willing to take personally.  Metal parts, maybe.  Perishable rubber, no chance.  I got burned by that with my old Alfa 147 with their stupidly optimistic belt change interval!
