2008 Edition 30 Thermostat change
« on: February 25, 2020, 11:30:29 am »
Ive read the replacement guides but am not certain if my car has one or two thermostats.
The car rarely gets above 70 degrees on a run so im assuming its time for a change.
Do you buy the complete housing and stat from vw to ensure quality or is there another source?

Think there are 2. Personally I’d be inclined to get an indie or VW to fit so then you have peace of mind all is sorted. If you’re near Nuneaton I’d strongly recommend R-Tech

I'd definitely get a genuine one, it's a pig to change so you don't want to have to do it again.

Manual ED30s have just the one thermostat, but I'm sure I've read on here that DSGs have 2.

All GTI variants have the main thermostat under the alternator, but if yours is a DSG, have a look at the gearbox side of the cylinder head for a second stat.

Yes just the one stat on my manual behind the alternator.
What a complete pig of a job this is, that video above made it look easy but took almost 3 hours in total.
Access is very tight doing this and I think I’d rather take the front off the car if I did it again!
Fitted a genuine vag stat housing so all should be well for a few years now.

I hated doing mine as well, access is an absolute nightmare, if I had to do it again I would definitely remove the front of the car as I've done that before and it's not difficult and would make access to the thermostat a hell of a lot easier.

Just a note; It looks like older GTI's came with multiple inline thermostats rather than the thermostat I am familiar with. This 2005 diy shows the inline type; https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=78341.0

...but this is the one in my 2007; https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-volkswagen-audi-parts/thermostat-replacement-kit/06f121111fkt2/
