Sound dampening/proofing
« on: March 06, 2010, 08:29:39 pm »
I'm looking to reduce some of the tyre noise that travels into the cabin.  I'd like to do this in a way that avoids cancelling the engine noise. Like the sound of that....

Keen to hear where I should start, materials required, etc.

I've never done anything like this so It'll have to be pretty straight forward stuff.

Thanks

Sit on a cushion.

the added benefit from this is your head is further away from the tyres.  :jumping:

Why not just buy quieter tyres.  :chicken:

You do know, Robin will be along soon to tell you the GTI is a aurel treat, and that any less road noise felt and heard through the car diminishes from the amazing experience of driving the Scuderia   Golf.  :P

TC you actually made me laugh out aloud...now for some serious suggestion plz.

P.S.  I didn't think the Michelin PS2 were particularly noisy.

No, the mk5's a bloody noisy car!  :P

I spend most of my time on the motorway and I would love it to be queiter. The first stage is dynamatting the doors and boot floor, then start lifting the carpets and deadening the floor too!

That is prob the best way to do it. If you really wanted to you could dynamat the roof as well!

Cheers... boot is pretty simple... I can see all the bare metal when looking at the spare wheel.

But where would I stick the dynamat in the doors?  Would this be removing the interior door cards and sticking it on the back of that?

And where can I buy this dynamat stuff from?  Presumably, there are different types and grades of this?

To do the doors you would need to take off the door cards (which is prob like the Leon MKII i.e. a pain in the arse) You just put the dynamat on the back of the door skin and then on the back of the door card. Lots of ICE or Audiophiles recommend that Sound Deadening is one of the best things you can do to your car for Sound.
Dynamat can be had from any Audio place or online. Its not cheap though! Have a look at http://www.dynamat.com/

Don't particularly want to mess around with the door skins...  is there no other way or compromise.

Door cards aren't that difficult to remove at all.  :happy2:

The door skins on the mk5 Golf just unbolt from the door itself. You won't easily reach the skin if you just remove the door cards.

Without traction power is nothing!

I recall somebody here stripped out their entire car and had it soundproofed with dynamat. Can't recall whether it was illyun (since he wanted it done) or someone like plush-automotive who is heavily into soundproofing/music.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Luke did the whole of his car. :happy2:
