Service question
« on: March 14, 2010, 10:45:56 am »
Hi guys
Now starting to look at a few Gti's and seen one with just under 60k on the clock.
Am i right in thinking that 60k is major service time? Ie cam belt, tensioners etc?

The major services (assuming its on time and distance regime) are at 40k intervals.

Oil change services are due on 10k intervals, and a minor service is at 20k intervals.  Major service is due at 80k intervals.

So 60k is minor service (can't remember the VW term for it!) which involves an oil change, and a quick look at everything basically.

There may be additional jobs needing doing, like pollen filter, air filter and possibly sparkplugs.  My pollen and sparks were done at 40k but it depends on age of the car as well as mileage ...

IIRC air filter is due at 60k miles.

Cambelt is now officially due at 4 years / 60k intervals.  So if its over 4 years old it should have been done and ask for some money off if not (~£500 ish at a stealer if they aren't doing an offer).

Brake fluid should be changed at 2 year intervals, but its slightly different for 08 cars onwards; 1st brake fluid change at 3 years then 2 years thereafter.

Yes.

Its only in the recent past that VW have changed the timing belt regime to 4 years / 60k.  In my service book it says its due for inspection from 60k miles and replacement at 120k miles ... no mention of time.

I'm not even 100% sure that 60k is the mileage to change it now but regardless its now over 4 years so its due.

Mine is an 05 with over 60.000 on the clock.I had them do belt/tensioners/waterpump etc as part of the deal. Not worth the risk.
