Front ARB help!
« on: March 08, 2010, 02:57:04 pm »
Can anyone tell me how to fit a new eibach Anti Roll Bar on my Ed30 please?!
Do I use the existing D clamps or should it come with new ones?
I bought the ARB 2nd hand and all it came with was some upgraded bushes (no D clamps).
When we took the original ARB off the clamps weren't in 2 pieces - they were fixed around the original rubber bush so now without breaking the collar that holds it together I'm stuck!
I thought the D clamps would just be re-usable?

Any help appreciated!  :happy2:

Basically you need a Saw & Welder.

Your Clamps will currently look like a U with a flat bit across the top which has the 2 holes in for the bolts to clamp to.

Basically at the top of the U (So top left or top right) Cut in horizontally. Once you have done that you can then twist the flat top part round to take off the clamp from your OEM ARB.

Same on the other Clamp.

Now insert your new bush & Bar. Then just weld the bit you cut back onto the other one and all will be fine.

Point to note. Don't spend ages on it with the welder as you will melt the rubber bush. Also make sure you put some grease between the bush and the bar or it will eventually start squeaking.

I'll try and draw a pic later on if that doesn't help.

You don't have to weld the clamps again if you are careful when you cut them.

I didn't  and mine have been fine for the past 31k miles

It's only a direct replacement if you get the clamps.

When you buy the OEM front ARB it comes all as one part with the clamps already round the bushes.

Having never seen a garage fit them i can't comment on how they do it. But unless you get some clamps then your going to have to cut your old ones off.

If you still have your old ARB have a look and see if the clamps are still on it.

You won't see the clamps as they are bolted to the subframe. The only thing you will see from underneath are the 2 bolts holding them in place.

To see the clamps you will have to lift the front of the car at one side and look through the arch at them :happy2:

I'm sure when I had my ARBs changed there was no cutting or welding involved...

Does anyone know if I can buy the clamps from anywhere? Will save the cutting and welding!
I have been to VW but they only sell the ARB as a complete unit - not the clamps.
Also spoken with Eibach UK and their kits don't come with clamps!
I must be able to buy them from somewhere?!

I did tell you the OEM Unit was complete  :booty:  :P

Unfortunately you can't buy the clamps. Well I couldn't find any when I looked. So you have 2 choices really.

Put the ARB in without the clamps. I know some people have dome that

Cut the old ones off to fit with them.
