Gearbox noise
« on: April 28, 2020, 10:30:44 am »
Morning guys,

Hopefully someone can give some advice on my recent development. So I have worked my way through a list of issues since buying my £1500 fsh 160k ‘05 GTI. When I drove the car first the gearbox did sound a little rough in the low gears but mostly quickly quietened down in 5th or 6th. There was clutch pedal issue where after accelerating it would sometimes stay half down but still work. I did a bit of research and added in the extra shims which sorted the pedal straight away. Over the past 3 weeks with limited use during lockdown I noticed more noise developing and now there is a whirring noise on idle which goes when you put your pit on the clutch. Having had a look online I’m thinking input shaft bearing and when I dropped the oil to change it I noticed a lot of brass filings. I have sourced a low mileage (86k) box for £250 delivered and although it can’t be guaranteed it may be a better option. I’m going to first try the new oil and I have removed one of the shims I previously squeezed in at the passenger side cap of the box to see if it was affecting things.

Sorry for the long post, any advice welcome

Thanks

The whirring noise at idle that goes when you put your foot down is normal, it's the layshaft bearings as you say.  They can go on for 1000s of miles making that noise with no issues.  Not worth the expense stripping it down just to shift that noise.

Excessive brass crumbs in the gear oil isn't normal though.  Could be syncro shavings or the plastic sleeves on the shift forks have come off and it's metal on metal.  Any difficulty changing gears?

Hi there,
No difficulty changing gears at all very smooth in fact. What was only in 1st to third is now in every gear and when cruising on the motorway it s like a worn differential noise ie power down worse and let off quiet.
Not sure if relevant but it since I’ve owned it (3 months) the gearbox has had a slight leak from passenger side area which was picked up in previous MOT’s.
