Given that not many people have added a set of four of these tyres to the MK5 Golf/MK2 Leon, its not something anyone can best advise on perhaps.

That said, I have been looking at getting a set of 888 or R1-R tyres, but am going against the idea now due to Toyos decision to only sell them through certain suppliers, and the recent obscene price increase to £200 each for an R1-R or £210 for a 888 tyre at Camskill who are normally the cheapest. The first question therefore is, does anyone know where these can be had for less money? Even with the discount code given, you only save £20 a tyre, so £180 for R1R's or £190 for 888's.

The second question is, can anyone give an experienced opinion on cheaper Trackday tyres or should I just look to get a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetrics and have them double as road/track tyres and save a bundle of cash in the equation? I know that if you look on the likes of Camskill, there is a choice available.

Any help or advice appreciated.

Thanks,

Al

I'd be very tempted to go for the Kumho V70A, gets great reviews and seems to suit the heavy MK5 platform cars better than the R888 and therefore should last a bit longer imo  :happy2:

Failing that if you wait till easter till the 20% discount offer is on and providing you can find a branch that will actually sell them to you, Costco will do do Michelin PS Cups at £160 a tyre...

NEGATIVE at Costco. I checked in the Oldham branch, £192, however they would not sell them me as you suspected... Silly really as if they are only supplying them what does it matter, you might be using them on a track  :stupid:

Trafford Park Costco said they'd supply them, but only when I'd told them they were to be fitted to some spare wheels for track use only. Guess it's who you see on the day. or rules have changed. I hope not the latter.

R1-Rs are getting some bad press as track tyres, they overheat and go greasy, epic fun on the road but noisy as hell. 888s are grippy as hell, but they've lost the USP of being cheap, so there's better alternatives. Kumhos and Hankooks are very well thought of, wear better and have stiffer sidewalls.

Do you want something to just use at the track, or are you wanting to drive to and from there also? If they don't have to be technically road legal (although these are E-Marked, so its a grey area... but probably not worth risking), there's a load of brand new Kumho cut slicks on PHeads at the moment in 22/40/18 at around £70 a corner from a defunct race series.

And lastly, having used both F1 assyms and PS2s on the track, the latter are a bit better. The F1s lose grip towards the end of their life, where are PS2s keep going till bald. The F1s also rumble the tread blocks when hot, which is annoying as you can feel them squirming.... but F1s are a lot cheaper, so if you forgive their faults and just race through them, then they'll do fine.
Sideways yo!

Might be worth giving Silverline Wheels a try. They have always been good to me for wheels and tyres http://www.silverlinewheels-tyres.com/

Motorsport sizings are done differently, but that's pretty much the same as a 225/40/18 - they'd make epic track tyres, not ones to use with OEM bushes though, you'll destroy them in a day with all that grip!!
