MK5 GTI engine cut out/possible misfire?
« on: May 09, 2020, 04:53:21 am »
Hi all,

So, this actually happened 2 months ago.

Turning right, suddenly engine cut out and car came to a halt. Tried turning ignition and it would try to start but fail. Eventually after a few tries, it started ok.

2 weeks later, same thing happened and this time the car just wouldn’t start unless I kept my foot on the throttle - even then it would jolt. If I left the throttle, the engine would completely cut out. The rev needle also seemed to move up and down between 0 - 1000 RPM.

My friend suggested it could be the ignition coil packs and that’s what it seems to me. Called AA and the guy connected the fault reader. Came up with a few minor codes I was already aware of, but I think one code to do with throttle valve (I think) came up, which I wasn’t able to see properly.

Anyways, he reset the fault codes and suddenly the car was perfectly fine.

Since then, I haven’t had that problem happen again, but the car does struggle to start sometimes- this morning it took a good 4-5 seconds to start after turning the ignition.

I recently got a major service done, where spark plugs were also changed. What could this problem be? Does it sound like it’s the coil packs?

I took the coil packs out and some did seem a bit “dirty”, with some green-ish residue on it. Not sure if that’s normal.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

Reewing? Do you mean renewing?

There are a number of throttle body/valve codes. There are a number of things that can cause the engine to shut off. Are coils one of them? No, not likely for them to all of a sudden be that far failed. Could be the throttle body failing. Could be the fuel pump control module. ECU/ECM may have a failure. There's more but without looking at data and codes...only guesses can be made at this point.

Difficult time trying to start; again could be the throttle body or its electrics, the ECU/ECM, or spark and fueling, valve build-up and fouling, Intake or vacuum leaks. But again, without looking at data and codes...only guesses can be made at this point.

You can take all the guesses and replace all we say if you like...trial and error method. But it can get spendy with zero results or you could get lucky.

Yeah I do need to scan it. Thanks a lot!
