Hi guys,

Bought a MK5 GTI which was advertised as spares or repairs to go alongside my Edition 30 as a second car. Long story short, the reason the car was advertised as faulty was due to the oil pressure light coming on for the previous owner around 6 months ago. He advised he stopped instantly and had the car towed to a garage who told him the oil pump is a bit tired however it still works, just advisable to change in the near future. He then purchased a balance shaft delete kit and a 1.8t oil pump however he had no funds to have these fitted and included them in the sale.

Anyway, I took the risk of buying it fairly cheap... He advised me he’d been using the car since the first incident and it’s been fine so I decided to drive it home.

Around an hour in to the drive, lo and behold the oil pressure warning light came on followed by a loud ticking. I pulled over within 10 seconds, turned the car off and had it recovered home. In total it was running for probably 20 seconds with the ticking/pressure light.

I haven’t started the car since. I have the intentions of taking it to a garage to have the 1.8 oil pump he provided fitted however I’m a bit worried the engine is toast and there’s no point in wasting money on fitting the pump. Anyone have any idea as to what I should do next... just looking for some opinions, is it best to have a garage look at it or is there some other way to determine if the engines finished?

Many thanks in advance

He actually had the strainer and pickup pipe etc all cleaned out a month after the first occasion of the light coming on so I don’t think it’ll be the pickup or strainer, sorry I forgot to mention initially.

Do you think it’s worth paying hundreds to have the pump fitted, are we looking 50/50 or is it more likely the engines done?

You could drop the sump and check the bearings for damage

Hi mate,

I’ve just scanned the car. The only code showing is relating to fuel pressure... the code is P310C Low fuel pressure regulation.. any idea what that might be?

Could be faulty reg. module, low fuel or pump itself
