Vibration when AC is on (among other problems)
« on: June 05, 2020, 01:54:21 am »
So the other day, I noticed that when I turned on my AC (I’d turned it off whilst airing out the car for a minute or two) I was getting a horrific vibration throughout the entire car (06 GTI). It still drove fine, so I turned off the AC and suffered the heat until I could get it checked for over.

I got it to my mechanic the next day and he replicated the problem, but alas, no codes. This is where things got interesting however.

He noticed that when the AC was turned on, the revs sat around 900, but turned off, we’re at 800. Also, when off, the car sounded a little bit rough at the back, almost farty? Almost like a misfire, but with no codes, it doesn’t add up.
His first thoughts for the vibration were the flywheel, which I’m still not ruling out, but would this cause oscillating/farty exhaust note?
Another suggestion was the valves sticking somewhat, which would explain the strange noise, but still not the vibration when the AC is turned on. It should be noticed that the car was barely used for 6 months and then not at all for a further 6 months, due to a combination of working closer to home and then a knee injury, so perhaps the periods of sporadic use didn’t help this.

To be honest, this could well be the end for the GTI, as most options are almost uneconomical to repair, especially when I’m saving for a house.

If anyone has any suggestions, I’d gladly take them, as I’m at a loss for what to do with the car.

Why would it be the Flywheel if it only occurs when AC is on?
The AC pump has an electromagnetic clutch on the pully, when the AC is off it free wheels and when on it engages the clutch and tells the ECU that it is adding load - raising the revs.
It sounds like something has gone wrong with the AC pump - this wont throw up a code.

Exhaust silencers rust and break down internally, you may have a slight blockage causing the strange noises.

Can't say I am impressed with your mechanics diagnosis, FFS take it to someone else for a second opinion.
Sometimes garages paint problems worse than they actually are... this tends to be followed by: we will help you by taking the car off your hands for this small amount of cash.

As LC5F stated,

If the problem only happened with the A/C on it’s would near enough defiantly rule out the DMF.

I’ve had the same issue with my 06 GTI and I had the AC clutch changed by a specialist. I also while I was at it replaced the solenoid that operates the clutch on the compressor as these are a common fault too!

It’s it’s vibration if day it was clutch solenoid related, a good way to start diagnosing is by taking the AUX belt of which is relatively easy on these and take the compressor off (making sure there’s not charge in the system of course) put 12V on the solenoid plug and see if you hear the clutch engaging, if not, you know where you issues is.

If it engages relatively well, I’d suggest replacing the clutch that operates it. Or if your on a budget get a second hand one. Then have your system recharged!

Hope that helps.
