Current market for GTI MK5

Hi this is my first post on here.

I'm currently looking to buy my first mk5 golf gti. I've spent a lot of time searching through Ebay and autotrader and been to view a few. They seem like great cars and it's a real big upgrade from my current car (mk3 clio).

I'm seeing a lot of gti priced all over the place. I have seen many at 3-4k with roughly 100k on the clock with minimal bodywork issues etc with good service history.

But towards 4-5k I'm seeing a lot with low owners and excellent service history in mint condition around 90k on the clock. People seem to price them at whatever they want.

Can anybody guide me into the current prices that these cars are in now. Also how much value are these cars roughly losing yearly as I am looking to own short term maybe 1 year or 2 at a push.

Edition 30 and Pirelli cars demand a premium, but personally i think they are overpriced.
As a useable everyday gti  a stage 1 remap and maybe a good intake filter, precat removal, this will not break the bank, anything after this will start to get expensive
Concentrate on service history, a 100k car with good history is fine.
try and get an 06 and later with the BWA engine code, as these seem to give less trouble
i would say 4k will get you a perfectly good car, with no issues, or buy a cheaper one, and expect to spend money on it.
Mine was an 100k 06 5 door DSG with decent history including gearbox services, but i wanted peace of mind, so changed timing belt, thermostat, intake clean, oil pick up and sump clean, pcv valve, cam follower, diverter valve, oil and filter change, along with a Revo remap, used EVOMS intake and resonator delete, this added £1300 to the purchase price, but it is now a good quick practical car, which makes all the right noises!
I am sure many other will give their opinion, but plenty about and with the current COVID 19 situation, you may be able to pick up a bargain.

I paid 5300 for my mk5 05 plate 96k. Full service history and dsg service at correct intervals. Body work mint and i for peace if mind got cambelt water pump cam follower full service and a few other little bits done as well as new gear selector fir dsg. Car now drives like a dream and got stage 1 remap booked  in. Best car ive had and only drive at weekends but its a joy to drive.

Which is the seller's right, and your right to look elsewhere if they're too expensive.  Basic marketing and supply and demand.

Nobody buys a car expecting to get lossless motoring for a year.  I don't think you're serious about this move at all based on your naive questions.

I paid £4500 for my 5dr in Black with 76k. Overall a nice car and imo worth close to 5k in the current market. It's an 07/57.

There are loads about but finding a good one is the issue. There are people on here that have traveled halfway around the country looking for the right car but have had a lot of disappointment. These cars are amazing value when you compare them to a MK6 or MK7 so buy the best you can as it will hold its value. It seems £4500 is the starting point for those one or two owner, low miles, full service history and unmolested cars that look and smell right as soon as you get to them.

From those prices looks like they are holding their value.  I bought mine 5 years ago this month, 75k, 07 plate for £6500.  Now on 118k.
If it's worth anywhere near £4k now that's £500 - £700 depreciation per year which is great.

Id say they are  keeping value at the.momemt as MK4 is too long in the tooth, and not as well regarded, MK3 was crap, so the cheapest decent GTi is the Mk5. 

If you are only keeping 1-2 years then don't pay over the odds.

Thanks for the advice guys. I picked one up on friday. 05 plate 1 owner 90k and full VW history. Very impressed with it so far! :)

I paid £1850 for my one owner from new FVWSH 08 GTi with 128k and in mint condition. Ok it was through my son who works for Audi and took in as a PX, but it’s been flawless and now on 137k and also been KO4d by R-Tech. Great car and with DSG farts is a proper fun drive. High mileage is fine as longs as the car has been fully maintained by either VW or a good specialist. You’ll get lots of advice here as it’s a good forum and lots of good and knowledgeable chaps on here. Good luck with the hunt and keep us all posted on progress
